oil leak
continueing on from my previous threads, I'm trying to resolve an annoying oil leak from the rear right of the engine.
I have looked a bit closer & it appears to be coming from around the bottom of the oil filter location.
Question is does anyone have a parts diagram of this area & what do the 2 rubber hoses that enter the housing do ? It looks like one of these is leaking.
Hopefully if I get time I'll remove the air filter assembly so I can get a proper look
ps. when you get the air assembly out, don't think that you need to remove the air filter cover, just undo the 3 nuts (1 on the lower side near ignition coil, one towards back, and one near front of engine), and take the whole housing out with the cover and all.
there are two furhter bits that will be attached and need removal, the plastic inlet from the fender pushes out, and the hose to the cylinder head also can be twisted off, just make sure you don't get anything into the throttle body once exposed
I think they are the oil pipes to and from the oil box going to the radiator's in built oil cooler.
If you do have to renew this, it is a b****r.
Hi The whole oil system is pressurized. if it is fractured you would be wise to get it repaired because if it let go all together after only a few minutes the engine would be totalled... not to mention a Formula I type oil slick...you could hope that the fitting is loose....it's just a difficult place to get in at without some serious dismantling.there are no seals it's a metal to metal taper fit.unless the oil is leaking from the fitting on the filter housing rgds
Hi another thought!!! check that the top of the oil filter housing is seating correctly..oil could oozing out and running down the back of th housing..a more likely scenario when you think of how often the filter cover is removed rgds
Correction, I think you will find O-rings as seals on those pipes. They can harden and leak, but extremely rare for it to leak if there has been no distrubance to them.
Do Clean the area up with aerosol can of brake cleaner (expensive but gives a good clean and flamable!), run your engine and check for fresh oil leak if any, other wise your leak could be historic whilst renewing oil filter or the oil filter cover its self leaking. Run your finger around the oil filter cover after a clean up, engine runing.
just had a better look & as far as I can tell the leak appears to be coming from the left pipe that enters the oil filter block ( this pipe is 'wet' on its outside for a bout 15mm )
I had assumed these pipes were flexis, but obviously they are hard lines. Is there a seal that migh have perished?
Is it a bugger of a job to do ?
Maybe it would be easier to leave alone & just keep topping up the oil?
