Re: new towbar arrangement

MB parts don't accept standart British tow bar bolts so everything was rebored ,overhang is not much and it is extremely strong also can be used as a step for the rear. And will easily accept proper tow bar mounted bike racks. I am happy 8)

Re: new towbar arrangement

Thank you Ian , I take that as a compliment. For a car like G wagen it is the least I can do.
hot66,
adaptor was £54ish +vat from MB
metal fabrication £30
the rest is up to you really.

Re: new towbar arrangement

Am I right in saying the the black adjustable part of the hitch is only held on by 2 bolts!!!

Those plates are designed and tested to have at least 4 bolts!

Looks very dangerous

Re: new towbar arrangement

the reason I'm interested is my towbar mounted cycle rack won't clear the spare wheel when I use the standard swan neck.

Probo easier for me to get a roof rack or spare wheel mounted cyle carrier

Re: new towbar arrangement

Well piggysims I salute your attention to detail. On the fotos you see only 2 bolts because the second spacer needed some grinding and it will be on
tomorrow with 2 more massive high tensile bolts, that is 4 altogether.
hot66 this bike rack issue is a bit complicated for g owners specially if you want to use the towbar but there is a solution for us as well , just check
www.maxxraxx.co.uk and you will find what you need. Roof rack solution is not a good one unless you want to have a hernia-long way up there.
spare wheel solution is good but if you want to carry more than 2-3 bikes you cannot. with my new towbar arrangement I have more options now.
Thanks again Huss. 8)

Re: new towbar arrangement

Oh I forgot to mention, you can also use this setup to Reverse Ram into a offensive/agressive vehicle -that is for self defence of course.

Re: new towbar arrangement

i have just brought a bike rack from my local bike shop together with my new toy "MARIN NORTHSIDE TRAIL AXC MOUNTAIN BIKE!!" the bike rack i got is a spare wheel mounted model and is made by a company called
"AVENIR" It cost me £59 and holds two bikes upto 35kg,with adjustable arms to cater for the offset sparewheel.i t fits tight and needs no tools to fit. i will be off roading this sunday for sure....!

ps, bikes have changed a lot since i last owned a bike 20 years ago !

Re: new towbar arrangement

I have a very nice tow bar mounted carrier I usually use on my Audi.

I'm a big Cannondale fan, been riding them since '93 (used to race Mountain Bikes circa 1990 )

This is my current steed, although I'm running much big disk brake set up ( hopes)

problem is since our 2nd daughter was born 18 months ago I've not had chance to ride much. Now on a mission to get fit again :)

This is my weapon of choice with room for crisps in the front basket and beers on the back rack, Looks good tied on to the front bumper of the G on holiday although I'm sure people think I have been involved in a hit and run

Re: new towbar arrangement

My tuppence worth - you might want to consider swapping those pins for small padlocks - I've seen adjustable towbars disappear off the back of Landrovers in the past
