I suppose you can but you need a different lenght short propshaft to connect them. Also, you'll probably need the flange of your existing gearbox to be connected to the new one (so that the profshaft can be connecte to it), because the one of the saloon is different to that of the GWagen.
i have had a w124-300d engine fitted to my230ge cabrio using the original 4 speed g/box of the G. the result is fantastic in terms of economy and power is much better than the old 617 engine.
a turbo version would be better still.....
The gearboxes fitted to the GWagen and the contemporary Mercedes saloons are based on the same design but differ somehow due to the special requirements for off-road driving (such as the ability to submerge the gearbox in water).
I suggest that you read the following links:

I've bought my G with an old perkins enigne and box in it and a W124 engine and box in the back,no idea why he changed it now drives and sounds like a traktor.
Is the G gearbox cale gear change or just a shaft to the box,I'm trying to work out wheather the gearbox on the W124 enigne is the car gearbox or the original G gearbox? any ideas?
Also would a W124 300 turbo diesel fit?
Thanks,loz
