Greetings from a new G owner
Hi. I joined the forum a few days ago having purchased a W460 280GE LWB in wine red last weekend.
I'm new to G ownership but I have an interest in Mercs, currently owning a 1988 R107 300SL and a 1992 W124 300TE. I also have a 1964 Land Rover Series 2A 109" 2.25 petrol with truck cab and 3/4 tilt - which is very different from the 460 in many ways.
There's absolutley no good reason for buying the G; I just fancied one. It needs a bit of tidying up. It was pretty much matt finish, but I've made a start with T Cut and wax and it is coming up reasonably well. There's some rust to remove but I'm hopeful that not much new metal will be required - time and the wire brush will tell!
Mechanically it seems OK. There was some nasty steering wobble at 60-ish, but all the advice on here and other forums pointed to the steering damper. A new one, plus a half-turn on the Pitman arm adjuster has sorted it. It idles a bit quick in neutral so I need to look at that, but other than the above, I think it mainly wants driving!
Where in Cheshire are you?
Welcome aboard - but you're going to have to change that avatar ;-)
Or else I hope you have a sense of humour - because you're going to need it with that!

Hi Malc welcome to GWOA. to adjust the idle look down at the spark plug distributor like the face of a clock... at seven o'clock you will see a greyish white piece with a slot across it about the size of a two pence piece.... using a wide blade screwdriver rotate clockwise or anti clockwise to vary the idle speed..if that does not do it check the throttle linkeage is slack in the idle position. failing that there is an allen key adjustment on the fuel metering head. I suggest you open "K series Jetronic injection systems" via your search engine and study the system...good luck with your G'..your LR is on the slippery slope....rgds
