Transfer box oil

The owner's handbook specifies SAE80 for the transfer box.

I always have a couple of gallons of 80W90 GL4-spec handy for the Landy (sorry, used that word again!). I am assuming it is OK to use this in the G's transfer box.

I know that GL5 harms pre-Series 3 LR gearboxes (bad for the brass components, iirc) but I've never seen anything that says GL4 can't be used universally.

Anyone know any different or have other observations?

Thanks

Definitely use the correct oil. Oil is cheap - a transfer box isn't.

Re: Transfer box oil

Thanks for the input, folks but I think you have misunderstood me.

I wasn't contemplating using the wrong oil, just trying to find out whether the stuff I already have is the right oil.

The following from the Comma Oils website confirms that EP80W90 GL4 is exactly the right stuff. Since their input comes from the MB data sheets I am confident to trust what they say. 'Fraid the tables haven't pasted neatly, but it is fairly straightforward to decipher.

Re: Transfer box oil

Personally I would only go with what is listed in your MB manual. There have been a number of problems reported with people using other oils which were listed by "the oil manufacturer" as being the right oil but not officially listed by MB.

Also what you list indicates that it is for the Getrag transmission. As far as I know that was an optional extra and not all 280GEs had that transmission.

But wait for someone like Mortinson or Pistonhead to chip in to confirm or not.

Re: Transfer box oil

Well it covers the grades and is a better oil... minefield with brass bearings but I would say you are fine.. I am already there with a semi synethetic Comma stuff in a multi-grade like that but I have done zero miles since then and the case has not disolved!!

Re: Transfer box oil

I have used comma oils and have, had no problems with them. The information they have given, I have trusted. On the face of it, it sounds the oil you describe is OK to use in the transfer box.

You can ring Comma Oils and ask again to confirm, they are usually helpful.

This oil is of a higher spec. and I have also used the same without problems.

This being a multi grade oil, you may find in cold weather that gear selection may be difficult to engage, should the t/box be cold, the gear selection could improve after a few miles of driving, with the oil warmed up. If the condition is too difficult you might have to change the oil to the mono grade EP80 oil or by draining a little of the oil, blend in, say, about 1Litre of ATF oil to thin the oil down.
