Steering clonks when running over bumps
My G runs fine on a flat road, uphill or even down hill, low or high speeds .... but I get this clonking sound and feeling over the steering wheel on bumps or uneven roads.
Is anybody familiar with this problem? Appreciate any help as I have no idea how to start with the trouble shooting.
cheers,
Jeff
Probably, broken or cracked front anti roll bar brackets.
Check closely, as a hair line crack can be easily missed looking from a distance.
These can be welded. It is not necessary to renew.
Hi Jeff,
You will find the bracket towards the rear part of the front trailing arms or as some in trade would call it hockey sticks.
The bracket is mounted from the body, coming down to the anti roll bar end. Following the anti roll bar in, attached to the hockey stick is the connection to the anti roll bar.
I suppose at this point I ought to mention other alternatives that could be the cause. Check the front shock absorbers at the top and bottom mounts, observe the the mounting rubbers and tightness of the mounting bolts and nut to see they are not overly loose.
Check on the front coil springs for any breakage, usually at he top coil or botttom coil. Do this by jacking the body, but not necessarily lifting the wheels off the ground.
After these checks, if nothing is apparent then you need future investigation, this involve jacking the the front end of the car or individually jacking each wheel at a time. Use axle stands to make safe your vehilcle at all times! Then check for play at the front wheels by moving up and down, the wheel at a 12 o'clock position and 6 o'clock position and move the wheel to and fro at these positions. There should be very, very little or no play. Play being present inidicates wheel bearing wear, or depending where this movement is detected, could be the King pin play.
Do this for now and come back for more if everthing here is covered.
Thank you for the feed back, much apprieciated.
Rakesh, this sounds serious.
Imagine, I have been driving about for quite a while now with this problem and always forgotten about it once I step out the G. Can I trouble you to point out where the brackets are situated? I'll get them checked out soonest.
Cheers,
Jeff
