Advice sought ref. ongoing situation with my front n/s hub which appears to be shaking loose the lock washer between the two locking nuts that secure the whole hub assembly.

The hub nuts were locked up to 200 Nm as per manual with the tab-washer between them, washer was turned down as per workshop manual and I continued to use vehicle. Less than 3000 miles later, with no 4wd high or low ratio use, the tell-tale 'ringing' was heard whilst driving along. Jack up and examine and yes, yet again, the lock washer had let go and the whole assembly was loose, remaining in place only by virtue of the fixed caliper housing The washer shews signs of 'chattering' which had destroyed the nipple that slots into the slot in the drive shaft which effectively locks the washer in place. Loss of same leads to the failure of the lock washer and the spinnning off of the nuts. Bugger!

This is the 4th time this has happened in the last 3 years and is getting silly. Both inner and outer tapered roller bearing are good, the c/v shaft that splines into the hub is in good order, no cracks or wear is apparent. Handraulic diff. lock tested and working. The offside hub is fine, good and tight with just a tad of end-float. I've not needed to touch it for years and years. HELP!!!

I think David you may have spoken to me about this on assembly last, quite a few months ago.

You may need to supply more information, but if play is detected in wheel bearings, usually it is of no help to readjust the play. This is because the cage of the wheel bearing has wear and weakness in it, adjusting the bearing simply compresses the the cage further, you get the feel that the bearing is adjusted, but the play returns after a few weeks. Excessive play normally should mean renewal of wheel bearings.

Have changed these bearings?, is that recent or a while back?
How do you know the bearings are ok at the moment?

There are two numbers for lock washers and lock nuts, have the correct ones? You will need your axle number, usual vin number and registeration number to ask your local dealer to check for you these numbers.

Are the lock nut faced correctly screwing onto the driveshaft? The conical profile should face towards to the hub. The lock nut should have the flat side of the nut facing the first nut fitted.

Need feed back.
