Front CV joints.......................
Right been looking for one for a wee while as my drivers side has some play, as i discovered in the article i did. just on the off chance today popped in local motor factors shop and asked, the reply i got was will be here tomorrow and will be £60 plus vat!!! so i will keep you posted on quality etc when it arrives will post some pics of the new one and like before will post pics of swapping them over on drive shafts. to be honest if they are crap! at £60 il change them every year! better than mercs 500 quid complete drive shaft assembly job!!
keep you posted
simon
Hello Simon,
A favour to ask of you. When you have changed the cv, would you save and keep hold of the old. When I get around to it I want to send one away to a reconditioning company to see how they fair. If that works out I hoping the club members could recondition their old cv's.
Initially, a small stock has to be built and used as exchange units.
Thanks
Hi Simon,
By all means bring it along, look forward to meeting you on saturday.
I reckon on being there by 11:00 ish.
Regards,
What is the manufacture's name?
Rakesh, will you advise as to whether you think the quality is ok.
I'll get some too if ok

Simon may be able to help you there, I saw no marking on the CV Joint.
Basicaly, The unit looked reconditioned as the splines seemed to be welded onto the CV Cage, proffessionally done, not a boge job.
On the whole, unless, it is in my minds eye, the CV joint looked, not as heavy quality as I imagined. I suppose, the only way to gauge the quality will be is to wait for Simon to fit to his motor, and see how that comes along.
Any Help please?
When I jack up the front drivers side of my '91 300gdl 463 I can move the wheel in and out top to bottom, not side to side. I took off the centre cap cover to discover the nuts were tight, no play but the whole shaft and bearing moves as one.
What am I looking at?
Bearings?
CV Joint?
Both?
what should or shouldn't I replace at this stage?
With 1" of movement how long have I left before the worst happens?
Regards,
Mike
you might think about kingpin bearings
Chris
Thanks,
Will check it out and report back.

Mike
1" sounds bad ..ie do before driving anywhere bad but I guess kingpin is pretty robust so worst case is killing CV and maybe axle castings in medium term.
King pin bearings are shimmed I think .. so you may need no real parts if lucky (tapered bearings). Offical method has a fixture to do this without CV joint in place so you ensure the housing is centred on the CV joint vertically i.e remove CV, set shims top and bottom, take it all apart and rebuild with CV .. so that may require some thought?
Think this is reason for killing CV's as you are now allowing too much movement and load gets shunted into CV .. hence reason for doing before driving.
.. must get a look inside mine before long. . ticking time bomb..
Simon and all, thanks.
Got a bit of a shock the other day when I found the play. Its driving great.
Joined the RAC/ AA today as I have a bit of a drive this weekend and I need the G for it. just thought i'd get a bit of insurance in place, just in case you understand.
Simon glad to see your thinking of us computer illiterates out there with your link included. You make life so easy, thanks again.

Mike
Well I did say I would report back.
Firstly, Simon thanks to your photos I had the confidence to take it apart.
Next, My problem turned out to be 1x inner wheel bearing self destructed in bits. 2x outer wheel bearing worn out (oe part). 3x cv boot in bits. Kingpin bearings were OK but am changing everything while I am at it incl. seals.
Also took some pictures as mine is a 463 and slightly different to a 460 so I discovered. When back together will post photos or at least attempt it.
Thanks again all.
Regards,
Mike
hi mike take note of all the bearing numbers and make (post on forum)
are you going to do the 2 sides at the same time
cheers
Hi Chris,
Yep! Its all or nothing.
Regards,
Mike
heres the new one, all looks good new boot, clips, grease and a new nut ( not sure if il use it or the standard g arrangement! even though the single nut looks easier!) Il bring it up on sat pistonhead so you can cast your eye over it!?
