Re: gaiters

MB do track rod end dust boots?? .. they are factory crimped in place

Transit track rod end dust boot from Pearl for 53p each !!!
http://www.pearlproducts.co.uk/viewpart.php?id=3393&oe=
.. they fit with a bit of a squeeze... use twisted MIG wire to hold them on and put plenty of grease in there..

Track Rod end = Quentil Hazel QH QR2397
Ford transit 18mm cone rh track rod end 1987-91.
460 series, lh or rh centre rod ends 1979-93 track rod details; Ford transit RHT ref. DR 2397 from DIRECT COMPONENTS. This is the nearside ( right looking from the front of a right hand drive ) track rod end with 20mm X 1.5mm pitch thread x 70mm thread length. The other side is crimped in place but if you have the tools and know how you could replace this with the same part - (thanks to Chazz)

www.speed-autoteile.com do them for 24.8Euros each. You need left hand and right hand ends - threads are different. These parts are also used on Fords. The Ford part numbers are as follows:
LH 5 021 447, 6 163 544 or 6 792 901. (3 numbers for the same item)
RH 5 021 446, 6 163 543 or 6 792 900.
These are the same as MB nos 000 460 73 48 LH and 000 460 72 48 RH.

For an 1989 460 from MB;
A4634600105 drag link =£163+VAT
A4603301703 wheel/steering box link = £132+Vat
A 463 drag link fits a 460 but the mount for the steering damper needs moved inwards.

does this apply to both the steering link and the track? If so I might be able to save myself £200 with a few tips.
thanks

Re: gaiters

Both links have a removable adjustable end... and a crimped in end. So if the dust boot goes on the adjustable end you just replace the part... but if the crimped end dust boot goes.. then it is a whole new assembly... unless you can just replace the dust boot.

In theory with a lathe you could make up a sleeve to match an adjustable end .. which you could then cut/weld onto the rod .. but be careful on the steering link as it has a funky bend right up close to the crimped end at the steering box end that is very very close on articulation to everything so need to check closely if you want to retain your sump  And not sure if the threads are RH or Left Hand .. good lathe operator could compensate but note competant statement below

.. of course welding on a steering component would need to be done by a competant welder ... as would the rest of it!

Re: gaiters

thanks for that. I am a competant welder but don't feel like risking it. I'm sure mb do it the way they do for a reason / geometry etc. ,I just wondered if I was missing anything.
I tried to order a dust cover from pearl but my dealer said it was no longer available
Many thanks for the help

Re: gaiters

Hi my track end has gone too. Luckily its the removable one on the passenger side.

MB say they only stock the whole drag bar assembly complete with two ball joints at £249 plus VAT!!
apparently all drag bars are different on 460

My bar has a number which says 463 460 01 05

The thread is Left handed and the rod is 24 mm in diameter - dont think the transit will fit as its only 20mm diameter?

Seek  a part in Germany seem to have them listed for my bar  at only 43 euros so i might try them.

Great if anyone knows a place in the uk for this

thanks

Just a little comment from "The Saint" on the right shoulder;  the Insurance companies will love this as a get out clause in a case of a claim.
Stick to pattern parts.

Re: gaiters

Hi all

I am with Rakesh on this one always use genuine even if it  means a complete bar.

However these are usually available in parts.

I have used part number A000 330 04 85 for as replacement boot in the past ...MB dont list it for the G but it seemed to work ok and are only £3 or £4 each.

The non crimp ends are usually avaiable as well as most were interchangable with the vans but ends only not the bars.

inventsc your bar number A463 460 01 05 lists a replacement end as A000 330 85 35 at £39.00 + vat available from MB UK.

If any one else needs help PM me a chassis number and if possible the part number off the bar would help and also which bar it is

Track rod or Steering Drag Link.

Re: gaiters

Hi Stephen

No problems

Most dealers are just scared of the G

Its easier to sell you a bar or tell you the price and scare you off!!!

Where in the country are you and i will see whos got one close to you
