Just thought I'd introduce myself, my new toy and ask for opinions on where to start... :)

Last night I got my hands on a 1985 300GD thats in need of some TLC. Its a canvas top SWB model in extremely faded red. One owner and 36k miles from new, and although it has a solid chassis etc, the body work isn't great. The interior is a state, with the previous owners dog ripping it apart when it went nuts while left in the vehicle a number of years ago. Although it requires an MOT I'm fairly confident its going to need very little and look forward to slowly carrying out the required TLC. Never had a 4x4 before or attempted a project like this and a little worried as the cars older than I am! ;)

Anyhow, I've attached a few photos. Any comments or advice will be much appreciated.

Some T-CUT will hopefully bring it up like that test spot above...

And dog attacks below...

Hi Congratulations. welcome and health to enjoy....I can probably help you with door cards and a grab rail and many other bits ad pieces.... what are the seats like and are there rear seats fitted? there are two G's here being broken for parts and I will be delivering a piece of equipment to Inverness Airport mid September so delivery is not a problem...check for water leaks around the windscreen and from worn wiper spindles the wheels look a tad rusty I have better looking ones here.also check if the fuel tank leaks when its full I have one of those also . To get the red colour back use domestic JIF cream first and treat ten cm squares to start of with then T cut the areas that are still dull then Autoglym high gloss polish.technically if no record of recent oil and fluid changes..I suggest change them ALL ... before you MOT it rgds

Re: Hello...

It could well be 136k or 236k, or even 336k

Replacing the interior bits should not be a problem... there are loads of Gs being broken for spares out there.

Most important are the mechanics, though.

Pretty certain its not. Vehicle has been local to me for the past 5 or so years since the lady moved to the area. Have never noticed it move from outside her house... :)

Has 13 dealer stamps in the book up to 29k miles and only covered 300 miles since its last MOT. A friend of mine's father has serviced it and put it through its MOT since it arrived in the area and has told me its like new underneath. Have tried buying it before but never had success.

Thanks very much for the advice, will have to try out the CIF ;) cream, would never have thought of that!

Handy to know your heading this way, will need to see what I get done. Not really got the funds to do anything at the moment as wasn't planning on getting it, just couldn't miss out on it at the price it was.... :)

Just out of curiousity, what brings you to Inverness airport? Work there or one of the companies based there?

Re: Hello...

Hi I had aG' offered to me recently with 19 stamps in book the but the last one was dated 1998..no matter..a cabrio at that mileage if proven is Very rare.and has value if it is complete...it should have a swinging external spare wheel carrier and a rear standard seat with conventional lap straps and a strengthened section integral with the windscreen. the rear door should drop not swing.there was a white one sold the other day for GBP 2500 on Ebay it had no rear seat belts or carrier. let me have the Vin number WDB...... and I will check the factory build spec for you

Althought there's a couple year gap between last dealer stamp and since I've know it, seriously doubt its covered 100k miles in that time! Only reason she kept it was sentimental value, thus why low mileage and why I've never managed to get it before...

Havent got the rear seats or wheel carrier. Put my VIN in that russian site last night but didn't really understand the option codes. Its 46031227037145.

Thanks
Ross

Re: Hello...

Hi Vin reveals the following..built in 1984 two seat version with spare wheel behind drivers seat.rear area trimmed in black.apart from that its a cabrio....from this it looks very original and genuine..if you have any Mots or invoices for servicing they may well support the indicated mileage.it would be a vehicle worth keeping and bringing up to pristine condition. if it is just "a G wagen" you are looking for I am sure there is someone out there that would give you a very good swop for one that will at least be warmer in the Inverness winter climate.

Re: Hello...

One of the pictures of the interior shows a steering wheel used for much less than 100,000 miles.

But the state of the body and surface rust on interior trim should also mean rusty floor panels seat base etc.

Have fun with this project and best of luck !!

Pambos, that G has spent his life in Inverness, Scotland, one of the places with the most dreadful weather in the entire world. It could be brand new and unused but if you left it outdoors for 20 years it could well look so rusty and faded as that...

I think that if the milage is genuine, it could perhaps be worth restoring. Soft tops are extremely rare in RHD and the W460 300GD was the only soft top GWagen ever oficially imported into the UK. Furthermore, the version imported into the UK was not a leisure-oriented Cabrio as in the rest of the world, but an utilitarian pick-up version unique of the UK. That is why the spare wheel is located behind the rear seats and why there is no rear bench or that the top is windowless... Very, very few of these were made and if mileage is genuine this is by far the least used of them.

The dog has eaten quite a bit, theres hardly anything left of the seats under the covers, the indicator stalk has chew marks on it along with the passenger side sun visor! Even claw marks on the windscreen under said sun visor!

Original radio... but it doesn't work.

Regarding the mileage, would probably bet the Wagon on it being genuine, only one owner remember. The previous owner used to stay in Kinlochbervie (check that on a map, its along way up...), and even compared to where I am the weather is alot worse there so explains the body condition a little. My last Merc also previously lived on north-west coast, and the body was worst part about that too.

The near side wing, head light and surround have been replaced after a low speed black ice incident, and although everything looks nice and straight, the paint job is a poor finish.

My pals father informed me that the front and rear diff locks are currently out of action too. Not certain if I'm correct in saying this as cant remember exactly what he said and I'm not up to speed on the G mechanics, but its suspected that the actuators are simply seized solid from never being operated! :?

Enough typing for now...

Yep. If I am not mistaken, that's a Becker Europa Kurier LMKU Mono (code E64). 752,40 Deutschemarks back then.
