Hi all

My project silver 460LWB is finished and on the road - at last - she's had a 280CE engine put in and certainly feels a bit nippier off the mark than any other LWB 280 I have driven, but it seems like the gearbox (which is the original and creamy-smooth in its changes) holds onto the gears for far too long - to get her to change up you need to back off onthe throttle slightly. This is not good in everyday town/urban driving.

It's highly possible the throttle linkages etc have been altered to accomodate the coupe induction system, and I have replaced several linkage parts, but I don't know the "crack" about the linkage that comes over the top of the head from the throttle and connects to the autobox. My question is - is it adjustable, will it help my problem, and how do you do it???

Many thanks in advance - I will sort some piccies when I re-wash her and start a separate thread elsewhere on the conversion.

John

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

Hi the linkeage from the throttle to the geabox is adjustable and as I recall the longer the linkeage the slower the change.I suggest you remove the cable from the end of the crossover arm and feel the travel of the cable by pulling it as if you were pressing the throttle pedal.then offer it up the the cross over arm in the idle position but do not connect it this should tell you the position of the cable end with the throttle in the idle position if there is free travel back into the gearbox on the cable with the throttle in idle try adjustingthe cable/arm to take up the slack still with the throttle at idle ...take it for a run ..at least you now have a point to start from...the cable cannot go any further back into the gearbox and if you still experience lag in changing gears adjust slowly so as to pull the cable slightly out of the gearbox ..repeat until the gears change at the rev range you want..i assume the vacuum pipe from the injector pump to the gearbox is installed and that you have no vacuum leaks

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

hi fixwin thx for the quick response. the gearbox connection is a solid bent-rod linkage not a cable with ( i think) i threaded ball and socket connection at the end at the crossover arm. the vacuum connection has been reconnected and afaik there are no leaks as it idles smoothly and is very throttle-responsive........
i may have a w123 manual somewhere and although its a different gearbox bearing in mind i think the adjustment is at the engine end there may be a similarity with the saloon in terms of adjustment so i'm going to have a look there - i was hoping to do it correctly the first time not go down the trial and error route!!!

thanks again

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

Hi sorry its a cable on the 463.. there should be threaded rods across the rocker cover on your vehicle. try applying the same logic.the whole system depends on how much the oil flows around in the gearbox at any given throttle opening.is the linkeage exactly the same on the engine you have fitted as the one you removed?? does the kickdown work?? if not then the travel is wrong on the rod to the Gbox

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

You need to just take out all the slack on the gearbox cable/ linkage when the throttle is at idle. There must be adjustment in the threaded rod to allow this. Pulling it tighter holds the gear longer, so sounds like yours is too tight

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

aha that could be it cos the whole linkage has been "buggered about with" till i'm happy with the idle speed/throttle travel etc - it was a pigs ear when i first fitted the engine. too dark now :( tomorrow beckons.......thanks

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

Sigh..............this has turned into a pain.......i adjusted so the linkage just took up the slack, took for a minor test=great, changes where i thought were appropriate. took it out proper last night, was in a tearing hurry=changing up at 4000rpm full throttle. :(
have spent ages fiddling with all the linkages eliminating slack in throttle linkage etcbut unfortunately it appears i do not have enough travel on the crossover linkage to take up all the travel on the gearbox linkage, so its either adjust up tight for higher rpm change possibility when accelerating hard....and suffer reluctance to change up in traffic etc, or have a nice change at the rpm i want but no holding onto gears under hard accelerating :(

hey ho, thanks for the help receivied thus far chaps.

Re: ?adjusting gearbox?

I used to own a 280E 123series and it did what yours is doing. I used to hold the gearbox manualy when I wanted to go fast. I couldn't get it to do both low and high end correctly
