Chap's,
My G seems to have develpoed a serious vibration at about 60mph. Above this speed (Yep she can beat 60!) it lessens. If I put slight pressure on the wheel to the right it also lessens. Tyre pressures are fine and I can find no play in the wheels. The front left tyre is showing wear on its outer egde. If I could find play in the left wheel I'd suspect bearings, but its rock solid and its just passed its MOT. I'll have the Tracking checked tomorrow which is my "hope", but I've also read from a link on this subject that the steering damper can cause a problem at 60mph. Any thoughts?

2 bolts / 20mins

Unlike a LR of the same vintage you shouldn't need an angle grinder / big hammer / swear box / bloody knuckles :D :D

Compaired the two :? :? The origonal one is much better than the replcement  :?  In that order...back to europarts for a new one

Moral to story if a jobs worth doing, its worth doing properly once!

Re: Vibration 60mph

Sounds like the replacement was worse than the fitted original.

I hear where you're coming from with doing the job once. I once replaced every hydraulic clutch component on a Saab 900 only to find the weld on the pedel was giving up; if I had kept pressing it long enough the pedel would have fallen off

The one on the G was better! I was trying to say I should have bought a new part and saved time and effort!

Europarts....I cannot make head nor tail of their web site? You cannot do a search for a G Wagen and they don't seem to answer e-mails. Do they have a phone number?

Re: Vibration 60mph

I had a similar vibration in My 1985 300GD at around the 100 km mark and either had to drive through it to 110 km or sit under it at 90 (far easier on the ears!) I too checked wheel balance of the standard steel wheels (with Toyo tyres), wheel alignment etc and still had it. I ordered the 463 damper from Germany but didn't get around to fitting it. While waiting around for it to arrive I fitted a set of BBS Alloys (the ones you see on a lot of early G's) which came with cheap Federal A/T tyres and the the vibration was gone. I expected the wider (15x7) rims and tyres to accentuate it but there is just no sign of it any more. Not sure whether this was a tyre or a wheel issue. Certainly the steel wheel and tyre combination are heavier but they all balanced OK. One of those things I guess but if you have another G owner near you it might be worth trying the changeover of wheels to eliminate the wheels and tyres completely.

FWIW

Re: Vibration 60mph

I think what the John was getting to is maybe the steel plies that make up the undertread on your tyres , one of them may have distorted and be causing your imbalance although this is normally more evident at lower speeds than you have mentioned.

I also bought a heavy type steering damper from Ebay and it made my steering much better. I have 18" wheels on.

Regards,

Mike

Re: Vibration 60mph

Johns a genius...I won't even mention the Rugby. I swapped the wheels front to back both sides having checked and found no bulgers or problems with the tyres. Took her out for a run and she did 70+ (that's a first)solid as a rock no vibration. I've swoped my 7j+ alloys with Jeepmadmike for a set of 51/2 Js so I'll be getting shut of the steels and having new tyres all round so should see the back of this problem.

Cheers for the interest chaps.
