Biggest tyre size for a standard 460 280GE SWB without mods?
All,
as above really contemplating new mud tyres 31x10.5x15 of 7j Alloys but,
can I go bigger without fouling?? Truck is stock in all respects.
Thanks in advance :?:
I had the 31x10.5R15 in my '84 300GD and I wouldn't go for anything bigger though I believe that 32" diameter is the limit.
Friends of mine in Holland have a 280 manual with 33 inch tyres (well thats what it states on the tyre, could be alot smaller!)
No issues with rubbing or driveabillity.
I had 34 inch Simex on my 280, that did need a bit of trimming so nothing fouled.
hope this helps
regards
Richard
For my twopence worth, I would agree with the others don't think I would go much bigger than 31/10.50x15 on a standard motor in mud T/A. Bigger tyres may fit without too much difficulty but for the use you are indicating stick with the above.
Should you move towards competition and far from standard then thats a whole different kettle of fish and a whole different set of objectives come into play then.
Stick with the 31's

Agreed, if for no other reason than you will have an adverse effect on the vehicle's overall gearing throughout both high and low range. The latter isn't low enough as it is, unless you happen to have the lower ratio diffs as well. There is also a legal point involving accuracy of the speedometer which has to be considered as it will under-read more as the tyres' overall diameter increases. However, only relevant if you drive it on public highway (er, including green lanes!). Just a passing thought.

w4hsa,
I recommend you check out Harald's Geländewagen website that has a topic on rims and tires.
