Re: Rear brake leak

Is it oil or brake fluid?

Hope it is just a resealing job for the brake slave cylinder ... depends on corrosion of the cylinder bore. I guess question is when did someone last change the brake fluid  .. this is what stop the moisture in the brake fluid coroding the bore. You can polish the bore out with wet n dry 1000 for minor pits otherwise it is a complete slave cylinder which is a few bob (£70 odd I think) .. and if you have not been in there it probably pays to get a fitting kit (see below). Should be able to recover the brake shoes by washing with water and petrol.

Worst case could be rear axle seal = oil leak .. then you will need relined/new brake shoes apart from having to get in there..

Fitting Kit for rear brakes with Mercedes brakes for 1989 460 300 GD is MA601 421 00 92 for £8.90+Vat. The lower spring is too short and strong – reuse your old ones

Ah .. now I remember .. £70 was for the bottom adjuster assembly which was a block of rust when I started with mine :-( .. they came back from the brink without the gaiters.

Re: Rear brake leak

Hi Huss if this leaking is apparent on both rear wheels I would be equally worried about the condition of the front calipers... as already mentioned moisture ingress in brake fliud is drawn from the atmosphere not wading or washing.corrosion will decay the pistons and aluminium castings and trying to polish the bores is a very temporary remedy..the master cylinder will also suffer the same fate as will the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder..and the diff locks.....Three years between flushing and replacing all hydraulic fluid is good practice in our wonderful GB climate
