460 numberplate cut'n'shut move
Has anyone done a cut and shut on 460 2 part rear bumpers to move the numberplate to the middle behind the towball a-la 463?
Seems there is room and it would be a lot neater (that rear numberplate mounting seems a real "opps where do we put this" design.. if it was a Jap car I would say it was the UK importer's attempt but I guess it will be down to MB car section  ).
You would have to take about 40mm or so off the inside of the bumper; it would still bolt up fine and you could would just reweld on the end after removing the section.
Some would say don't mess with a classic, others that expensive plastic 463 bits are the way to go.. I like the protection of steel without the uglyness of the numberplate mount. My wires all need redone anyway so that is not an issue. Idea would be to have it flush with the bottom lip of the bodyshell and mount it from from brackets held on by the tow hitch with lights either side (hidden by rear bumpers). Issue could be body shell movement verus chassis movement but that must be 2-3mm max. You would loose a little of the step from non numberplate side. Need to weld up holes in numberplate bumper (welder) and mine has taken a hit so will never be flat  (or has someone got a good (rust not issue) numberplate bumper?)
Issues and problems ? ...
hi mgrays,i have just brought an original "one piece" 460 rear bumper and i plan on centralising the number plate onto it too.
i think this is what you mean,it belongs to buket;
You can also buy an OEM split rear MB bumper....
go for it....
pm buket(nick) advice is free and i guess he likes a chat about G'S LIKE THE REST OF US
that man has done a lot of neat work to that 460
I think that there is a part made by DC that will fit between your left and right bumper.
As far as I can see is this the option that was used on the beautifull G from Buket.
The partnumber for the part between the two bumpers is A 460 525 21 39
I think it is possible to modify your bumpers so the part will fit in
can anyone check if that part is available over here

Any MB part would be available in the UK... it's only a matter of getting your (un)friendly Mercedes stealership to get it for you and to rip you off in the process....
I'd try German Ebay instead. I've seen those pop up there every now and then.
Cheers
wout- nice info on the centre plate part available MB.
but where are the licence plate lights relocated to :?:
hi Isa :!:
please check your archives on late 460's, i am 99.9% sure there is a photo of the rear end of a 460 with centre fitted number plates in a MB brochure:wink:
i am intersted to see if it was flush or set back and where the licence plate lights were fitted.
rgds hus.
I think you can put the license plate lights on the right and left side of the bumper. If you look at the pictures in the beginning of this topic, you can see how this is done.
I'm sure there is some information on the german G forum about this. I.ll try to dig it up.

Found the solution for the license plate lights in the EPC.
You have to modify the bumpers or buy the original ones.

Hi Huss,
You obviously have photographic memory :!:
I have just combed every page of the 36 W460 & W461 sales brochures in my collection and the only one I could find was in a September 1989 UK Brochure... it does not give much detail about where the plate lights go so I would assume that the set up is pretty much the same as in the W463.
Cheers

I am unsure as to whether it is a factory vehicle....
But then again, Graz seems to have produced some weird, unrecorded bodywork styles....
I want that Puch...............
Maxwell; I have the 2 part bumper .. as most 460 do? (I know there is a one part one for sale on ebay for the last 6 mths!) .. and I have the number plate "growth" on passenger side where the bumper becomes useless as a "bumper".
Hus; Well I was not going as far as Buket (previously just presumed that was a full 463 rear set of bumpers - must pay attention!) - he has moved Fog light and added 463 lights/reverse light. He has also cut bumpers square whereas I was thinking of cutting/shuting the rounded end. Interesting how his number plate sits in line vertically and horizontally .. I was going to butt it up under the bodyshell sitting on the bottom vertical lip (so further forward away from tow ball) and so have space between bumper and bodyshell for the original lights mounted vertically. I will have another look at the options shown by Buket, thanks.
