Bonnet Mouted Spare
I do a lot of towing. I often take the spare off the door and either throw it in the back or bung it on the roof rack.
Any one put it on the bonnet?
If so have you used the mount off the back or what?
Does it restrict the view forward much?
Would this be classed as a "mod" by the insurance?
cheers Grendle
Grendle,
I have pondered this one myself as hooking a trailer on with the rear mounted spare is murder on the back.
( a ) I "think" the bonnet is plenty strong enough?
( b ) If the wheel was kept up near the screen it would not obstruct the view
But ( c ) One could not open the bonnet
( d ) but wheel further forward / too far forward, blocks the view and is a lot heavier to lift bonnet , and wheel could bust windscreen if allowed to fall back , check strap required ? and bonnet might need a second or stronger prop.
And finally I suspect that you would be better with the rubber resting on the bonnet to spread the load more evenly.
Central pin and padlock for theft security, and locating "ring" to centre
Suitabley proportioned tiedown rachett strap to secure physically?
But to go back to the beginning the army landrovers had this arrangment, but always plenty of help to lift the bonnet.
I analysye stuff to death.
Cheers Marcus

:D Very good thinking Marcus
You have to much spare time on your hands
Paul you can have my old rusty bonnet to have a play with and see if its a worth the effort first.
bonnet mount
I think you will find that there are now laws about putting spare wheels on the bonnet. Hence Land Rover no longer offer that fitment as an option. You may have noticed that the military's HS Land Rover 110 - sometimes erroneously refered to as Wolf - has the spare wheel hung somewhat precariously on the side of the truck. Boy, can that do some damage when the driver gets it wrong!
I am pretty sure that as a consequence of the change in the law, there would be insurance ramifications too. I should look into this fairly carefully before you commit to "cutting metal", as it would be a shame to put all that effort into the task, only to have it scuppered at the final hurdle.
Looks like she needs a shower to me
( a ) PVC skirt
( b ) too too thin
( c ) did I see a tie down strap in there somewhere
( d ) I fought the law, and the law won ( hypothetically only )
Now what was that about too much time on my hands? Chris?
Cheers

Not pvc - leather
Paul i might try to get a mate out with his G on sunday.

You do have the spare in the higher position?
On some 460s and 463s you can rotate the carrier to raise the position. If the mounts look symetrical then you probably have the earlier type.
no,not mine, just came accross it somewhere and kept the picture. Here's another
And even if I mounted it any higher,
I am NOT a Dwarf,
I would still be crawling about below it
The roofrack mount in the pic pulls out and hangs down the side of the car and is probably counterbalanced.
Re:- security - padlock and chain or get a spare carrier off a scrapper and bolt it to the rack.
food for thought

Paul im not sure what im going to do with my spare wheel mount yet, i've been considering mounting it in the tub but i've not made up my mind yet and bigger tyres keep tempting me
Yes lots of thought put into that cheers. My mate has an ex RM L***R**** Defender with the Tyre on the bonnet I think I'll have a good look/fiddle with that. I'll let you know about the weight siting etc.
Thanks
