HI all

I have a 460 280 LWB which has a high compression coupe engine in it. I installed it with all the coupe bits and bobs, water pump, induction gear etc.

In these days of cold weather, I'm struggling to get her really warm to defrost me, The temp gauge never chages from the first segment after the blue ie running cool....She was the same on the original and a new thermostat, the rad, heater matrix and block were all flushed as was all the pipework, the heater valve is definitely fully open as it's been disconected from the linkage for investigation purposes.

When I fitted it I asked on here whether people thought I should use the original fan and metal blades, or keep the coupe fan which has a lot nore plastic blades. The consensus was use the coupe one.

I know nowt about viscous fans, is it possible it is permanently engaged (certainly sems to spin like the clappers, even at idle. Is there a way to test it? I dont want to go down the DIY route of cardboard in front of the radiator. Thanks

Re: The opposite to overheating !!!!

Hi when cold the viscous fan should turn by hand without turning the pulley.... and has a large hub in the centre... a regular fan just bolts directly onto the water pump..why not try the cardboard baffle ?? at least you will prove a point and then you can source a thermostat that opens at a higher temperature..did you refit the plastic fairing that shrouds the fan blades and is fixed to the radiator??? and are the blades that are fitted now the same diameter as on the old engine?? ......

Fan is as stiff as sticks when engine off (was warm, to be fair). Has a large finned body (alloy?) that the blades bolt to. Shroud was refitted properly, (a pain!!), diameter about half to one inch less than shroud aperture. Will check again when cold

Re: The opposite to overheating !!!!

Hi the fan will not be completely free even when cold....there could be a difference in blade pitch.perhaps the car had aircon with a heat exchanger in front of the engine radiator.... a coarser pitch would generate more airflow at lower rpm....just a thought !! presumeably the water pump driven pulley is the same size as on the original engine....the car may have had a thinner smaller core radiator.

Same pulley, car does haev aircon and aircon radiator in front......I may re-fit the original blades to see if it makes a difference

Looks to me that the viscous coupling of your fan failed a while back and a previous owner cancelled the coupling solid.

The proper solution toy our problem would be to replace the viscous coupling by a new one. Not cheap, but they are good for 12-15 years of use.
