Hello out there,
Does anybody have detailed and precise data for aligning correctly the wheels of a 04 SWB G500 W463?
From where does one adjust the steering wheel angle so that it is "dead straight" when the car goes perfectly in a straight line on a level surface road?
Many thanks.

Re: Wheel alignment

No sure what the settings are but you use the track rod + drag link to adjust this.. if the wheel is miles out you can use splines on steering wheel but you may have sensors here so better to stick to old fashioned spanners.

Track rod goes between wheels and has steering damper on it.. this has an adjuster on it. Use this to adjust tracking (ie wheel to wheel alignment that affects tyre wear and feel of car)

Drag link goes between steering box arm and one of the wheel hubs.. this has an adjuster on it .. use this to adjust steering wheel position .. cheapo way is to to count the fractions of turns of the nuts and take it for a test drive in between .. real garages could do it with lasers on rear wheels but not really required/needed on a simple cart axled G.

Re: Wheel alignment

Don't think I would be too fast at removing the steering wheel inside the vehicle. Consider the airbag first. Second the steering wheel should not have to be removed ordinarily just to get your tracking right as it would affect your turns lock to centre on both sides.

Sometimes a job like this can be best left to your local mechanic with his simple mirror gauges. For the small money you would spend he would have the hassle as the nuts and bolts to be opened can be very stiff not to mention the stubborn adjusters. Many knuckles saved.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Mike

P. S. Settings wise I would toe in at the front about -3 min each side.

Re: Wheel alignment

First of all thank you for your comments.
Tyreman let me clarify: I do not intend to carry out the job myself - it is beyond me. It will be dome at a friendly garage. They have a modern wheel alignment rig with laser sights and everything. The problem is that in the hard disk data which theoretically includes all cars, the G-wagon is missing. That is why I am searching...

Woops, sorry must have misread your posting.

Re: Wheel alignment

Hi ,
Wife had taken over the office at home so no access available.

We use a Sun/ John Bean multi head ccd computerised alignment system at work. I did look it up as promised and apart from a toe adjustment there are no other adjustments listed that do not involve the replacement of parts to correct . Usually as a result of an accident or just worn out.

The toe reading on our system is : 0 degrees + 2 minutes each side for all g463 based vehicles from '91 on.

I have since checked this with a MB workshop manual and it too gives the same reading.

Sorry if this is not what you want, but it seems to be all that is available for you to adjust.

Regards,

Mike

"She who must be obeyed" takes similar liberties with my office, here in Greece.
Regarding alignment data, thank you for your effort and kindness.
