Fanbelt making annoying whistling sound
Hi,
My 1991 g makes a strange sound when driving. I'm sure its coming from the fan belt. A sort of whistle sound is made. Could it be loose?
The performance is seems fine. Any ideas?
John
Hi John could be a number of things.... idler pulley bearing.alternator bearings.water pump bearings. creaking fan belt. I have a new belt but the other "possibles" mean stripping bits off.... could be prop shaft bearings if it only happens when you are on the move..... rgds and a happy new year
I have '91 300GE with M103 in it and it started to whistle a while ago. Cooling liquid is disappearing at the same time. So I noticed the water pump is leaking a little. I'm sure the pump's bearing is busted.
Hi John low oil in the power steering reservoir will make a screeching noise....
Following up on this, I have a whistling noise but it appears to come from the fan (no airconditioning), and increases with fan speed and vehicle speed (as more air into the air box pushes the fan to go faster?)
It only started yesterday, perhaps the fan motor needs some lubrication (but removing the dash is not something I am toying with right now!)
dry or corroded bearings are the most probable cause and not accessible without removing the blower assembly....we have tried misting the bearings with an aerosol lubricant.by closing all the blower outlet vents in the dash and rear duct.then with the blower on full power spraying the lubricant into the the intake duct in the engine bay directing it to each side rather than the centre.with the vents closed the rotary drum impellor turbulates the mist inside the blower chamber...has been known to work for 12 months between treatments...doing nothing leads to a burnt out motor as the bearings sieze....after the spray treatment open all the heater vents run the engine to max heat and the blower on high speed ---until the smell of the lubricant goes away
check all the pulleys for play - as fixwin points out the bearings going are a common problem.
Thanks for the ideas gentlemen, I shall try that method. Putting up with the smell of WD40 for a few days isn't the worse I've had to endure in terms of smells :D
don't use WD40 - it's not a lubricant. get silicone spray or try baby powder.
Ah so WD40 is out? Hmm I have a selection at hand, including a few greases (lithium, copper) and PTFE spray, but not silicone (yet).
fixwin38 any input on the type of lubricant you used successfully?
3in1 multi purpose PTFE aerosol 200ml cans from Choiceful. com and others about a fiver..
Thank you! Will stock up on some on my next shopping spree...
