Seeing as I have no tool kit in my G, I thought I had better build one.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what tools you think should go into it?

Re: Tool Kit

Hi Max to bring your vehicle up to spec it would need to be the standard toolkit provided with the G'.....if you plan to do your own roadside engineering perhaps you should look at Sears Roebuck "Craftsman" toolkits (cheaper than "Snap On") otherwise a Jack. wheeelbrace.security nut socket.towrope.triangle and a box of bulbs..AA/RAC membership and the mobile phone

Re: Tool Kit

You could also look at Teng tool kits - lifetime guarantee - a good set of 3/8 sockets, spanners and screwdrivers comes in a robust box. 9 times out of 10 it's a 13mm spanner thats needed.
It might be an idea to go through what people carry at the up coming weekend too.

Agree with the teng tools they are very good sets, also hose repair tape, cable ties and couple litres of water pretty much covers everything

Re: Tool Kit

Ouch - a little beyond my budget. That and it won't fit in the underseat storage compartment.

But seeing as I might as well get decent tools and figure that most of that tool kit wouldn't be used...

If I got something like this http://www.teng.co.uk/product-details.asp?prod_id=797

I'd say the second set would be a good start - it has aproper ratchet handle and the screwdriver bits are good quality. Can't go wrong for 33quid

Re: Tool Kit

At bear minimum, go for combination spanners, 8, 10,11,12,13,17 & 19mm
Screw drivers, 'Pan-head' (flat blades) 1 x small, 1 x medium. 'Phillips' (cross head) 1 x small, 1 x medium. 'Pozi-drive' in a medium blade (like a phillips but with additional segments in the cross cut).

1 x medium comination pilliers, 1 x medium long-nosed pilliers.

1 x extenable handled wheel brace, this particular one comes with an interchangeable socket, servicing 17 & 19 mm sizes.

The following items, preferably in 3/8the drive.
Spark plug socket, 14mm for 463GE or 16mm for 460GE.
1 x extension bar (3" long), 1 x extension bar (6" long) and long handled rachet. Except for the rachet all items may be bought from the factors or markets, but buy a good quality rachet from Halfords range or similar.

Re: Tool Kit

nice tool kit maxwell, but a bit small i think.

but still,better than none.

i built up a complete kit from mercs original parts including the case.wasnt too expensive either.

another aspect overseen is whether you have a jack and handles and does it work

always worth testing it to make sure......

i always keep a trolley jack in both my G's.

(is there a repair kit for the bottle kack? my cab's one is nackered :!:

A bit of polythene to lay on with your best suit, unless you have a good dry cleaner
A good torch - the new static electric ones are good because no batteries to go flat or a 12v flourescent on a cig plug

Not sure where you shop but its a couple of hundred squids!! I think I have most of what I need in that kit other than pliers and such.

I've got full rubber matts I could lie on. In addition I've got an "ok" drycleaner...

Don't worry about it being 1/4" . It is fine for general maintainence and you can add a 3/8" set when you are clearer about what you need, just get worried if you start thinking 3/4

A little can of plusgas penetrating oil is worth having.

I've had a global search saved on eBay for the past year and haven't found anything. Plus I figure I might as well get better quality tools.

Re: Tool Kit

The question you asked about tool kits was a broad one and everyone gave replies mostly from their own perspective - from being able to change a bulb to a full engine rebuild in the bush. What you've bought will serve your needs for now and will still be of use when in the middle of nowhere along with some bigger tools.
I joke about needing a 3/4" socket set because if you needed something that big to fix your car you'd be in trouble. Let the LR boys carry the big stuff
FWIW I broke a 3/8 drive Teng socket undoing the bottom brake calliper bolt by using a 3ft pipe on the ratchet handle - it loosened the bolt but put a small crack in the socket - I told the dealer what i'd done and he replaced it free 8)

Re: Tool Kit

dentsmithy,i have invested in 2 socket sets by BAHCO.

not sure of their quality compared with TENG :? I now need a good set of spanners.......any ideas?

max, what use is there for a spark plug opener in a diesel tool kit :?

reading all the comments does give a good idea as to whats neccesary.

i guess though that fuses are the least thought of aspect, but a cheap invaluable must :!:

the lantern in the original ones is a great one, with steady white (yellowish) light or flashing red, with 4 D-cell batteries that last a long time, too bad the dealer in dubai claims they are no longer available (item 43 in pic)

Hus - that's what I said!

M2dxb - I'm missing the lattern too but haven't tried to source a new one yet.. But figure a Petzl headlamp for working... though of course that is not a safety light for road use.

Huss, I have some Bacho tools and they are very good, but the reasons I mostly buy Teng is that, a) I can't justify snapon prices, b) Teng have a lifetime guarantee, c) I am a blacksmith and am very heavy on tools - they get near the forge and hot, used on site in the rain as well as left in the mud under the car when the exhaust has fallen off. In 5 years with this abuse I have only had one breakage ( see above). I can still gather everything together, put it in the car and take off with confidence.

For my money it's Teng every time.

Re: Tool Kit

I must admit i use 1/2 drive , tends to give more push when needed ,
Halford pro range are comfortable to use , get a 13mm and a 17mm ratcheting spanner very usefull in tight spots .

Re: Tool Kit

Ok for a tool newbie - I get ratcheting spanners... but can you please explain all this 1/2 drive, 1/4 etc etc.

Also why are you speaking imperial - is the G not metric?

Re: Tool Kit

Bahco
Make the best adjustable spanners that I have seen, and some other wonderful adjustable "oddball" spanners.
Havnt ever seen their socket sets though, I would imagine they are pricy but first quality
I have almost a full set of adjustables right up to 450mm/18" = about £50.00 retail  that was just for the 18" one
I use a 3/8" Draper "Expert" socket set, it appears to be very good quality.
That said I would not be hung up on brandnames, depends what is on offer, by the sales point or manufacturer, however I will not purchase rubbish.
I did buy a "Ring" rechargable LED work light, it is truely phenomnal, the life on a single charge is amazing and good white light too, the on-off button should be on the back though.
But I think my favourite tool is the German hammer out of the Fahr
about 1 lb, a square face at one end and a an almost chisel face at the other, most wonderfully useful tool, and a wee bit of home seasoned ash has provided an unbreakable handle to date.
Just waffeling

Re: Tool Kit

A socket has a hexagon (6 point) or bi-hex (12 point) to fit on the bolt. The other end has a square apperture for the ratchet handle - these handles come in 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" depending on how subtle you want to be.
For 1/4" think delicate and fiddly tight spaces, for 1" think tractor with a 20st farmer jumping up and down on a length of scaffolding pole to get the wheel nuts of his muck spreader( sorry, flashback to ex-father-in-law).
The imperial system is an old industry standard that has stuck and applies to all socket systems but has nothing to do with the other end of the socket you use on your car.

Re: Tool Kit

Halfrauds pro ratchet combi (ring/open) set are nice; got a set and work well but do not have some odd sizes (15mm the other day on a Seat/VAG). They go on offer every now and then..

Just got a set of combi Bahco spanners on a little plastic holder 6-32mm or so.. they do cheap ones which I got (the steel is stiff enough so you know they are quality) and there are Pro/polished ones that look nice but are expensive .. my set was bad enough at getting on for £60 when on special offer.

I have a set of open 6-32mm spanners with every step from Germany.. forget their name.. Elora maybe.. anyway again they come in a little plastic clip so you can pick the whole lot up in one go and know you have every spanner you need.

Draper socket sets have done well;15 yr old 1/4",3/8".1/2" + China 3/4" set... broken 2 socket by hammering onto oversized nuts, but get a cheapo 1/2" 6 point impact set for hammering onto rusted nuts .. for odds balls like that any market/show place does fine just bend the spanners to "feel" the stiffness of the material in comparision to expensive spanners and then look at the quality of the teeth/openings.

Must admit car tools kits just get a cheapo set of Draper combi spanners.. 7mm to 19mm .. only broken one so far and at under a tenner cheap..

Never got Teng .. most quality tools are lifetime guarantee if you ask (Bahco, Britool, Halfrauds pro etc) .. I did not really like their quality of finish and it seemed a truimph of marketing over substance?

Re: Tool Kit

It is tempting, especially 'till you get a feel, to use a big ratchet on a stuborn bolt when a little penetrating oil and patience will move it. A big leverage on a frozen M8 bolt will shear the bolt before loosening the nut.
I think a good 1/4" set should do most things you need for now and, if storage space is limited a 1/2" ratchet with a few bigger sockets, 17mm and 19mm will suffice. An alternative would be an 18" breaker bar which, used with a 19mm socket will loosen your wheel bolts and you can use it to loosen anything stubborn then use the ratchet.
Most Teng sets have an adapter up to the next size. I assume you've worked out to press the round button on top of the ratchet to locate the socket - brilliant when removing oil covered sockets.

Ya I was looking at that kit - seems to have everything needed. But unfortunately it is too big and doesn't stow away anywhere in my G.

However such a nice piece of kit I think I will get one anyhow - good for trips.

I have a15mm spanner for something on the g wagen but can't remember what :(

elora spanners are very good and bloody expensive. Our local engineers merchant sells them off cheap on stock reduction - got some big,32,30 and 28 at £7 each
I've used a set of polished teng combi spanners, 8-22 for 5 years without any damage so far.

Cliff, I do like the look of that kit, no fuss, just what yo need
