Hi All,

Hopefully this post might be of benefit to someone some time. Recently purchased an original MB 3rd brake light the kind that fits to the top of the rear window.
Needless to say it didn't come with instructions and I'm not an auto electrician but still managed to fit it without setting the vehicle on fire so far.

1/ Remove gently the upper inner door trim panel (this covers the rear wiper motor).

2/ Remove the hinge side window trim panel by removing the 2x upper screws and 1x lower screw.

3/ Offer up the light mounting bracket to the panel, mark and drill 4x holes in the upper steel door panel with a 3mm drill bit, a 61mm centre approx. should help centering the light in the window (2x rectangular holes in the frame already should guide you in this) .

4/ Install a light electrical cable from the left brake light through the rear door up to the mounting location ( Depending on difficulty may be routed along plastic trim run but importantly use the conduit in place from door frame to door and it won't be easy. Back door card will also need to be removed).

5/ Attach cable connector to the brake light.

6/ Attach brake light to the brake light holder with the 2x sheet metal screws.

7/ Attach rubber rubbing strip to bottom of brake light holder (its about 150mm long).

8/ Now attach brake light assembly to the door with the 4x screws.

9/ Finally, attach upper inner door panel and check brake light still works. Also (see note 1).

Well done, you should now be finished if all went well.

(Note 1) / A large chunk has to be cut out of the upper inner door panel. This for me was a daunting task as after this there was no going back. This is to enable refitting of the panel after the light is fixed in place.
You need to cut out a rectangle shape measuring 104mm x 28mm. Its exact location corresponds to where you fitted and centered your light . Offer up your panel in place and mark the location of the light. You are now ready to cut, so check again and remark to be sure your right. I know it sounds silly be make sure the panel is the right way round.

For me it was trial and thankfully not error. Hopefully it might make life easier for you. Best of luck.

Regards,

Mike

PS Needless to say you follow these instructions at your own peril as I can accept no responsibility for any cockups as a result. Your on your own!!
