f/l hub is seeping grease out on to the steel wheel, got a friend, a local truck mechanic, to have a look a few weeks ago he tightened and topped it up, was ok for a while but it's back seeping again.

Might it need overhauling, what's involved?

I'm not very mechanical so bear with me if I don't get it straight away.

Any advice on the subject much appreciated.

thanks in advance

Re: hub seeping grease

Hi if it is coming out from the centre of the wheel remove the plastic trim cap and shine a torch in the hole ...you will the flat face of the cap that retains the grease in the wheel bearing housing..this cap is held in place by the tapered walls of the cap. if it was damaged when it was removed to work on the hub retaining nut it needs to be replaced....however if the grease has liquified due to heat either the bearing is worn or too tight or the brake is binding and heating up the brake disc which in turn is melting the grease...remove the steel wheel for a closer inspection.....and I still have your hubcap in the workshop..... I will post it this weekend ......

Thanks for that,
Well, that's where the cap is missing from.

I'll have a look at it tomorrow, but now that you mention the brake binding issue I have recently heard an intermittent squeak coming from that wheel.
Comes and goes away again but it may point to the brakes given what you have mentioned.

All the best
I'll watch out for the postman; 'cap' in hand!

If it turns out that you need bearings or seals give me abuzz and I'll save you a bit of leg work and give you all the part numbers you need. Had to do similar job on my own.

Mike

That's great Mike, thanks.
With a bit of luck it will just be brake binding issue.
Getting it checked out early next week.

all the best David

Re: hub seeping grease

Finally getting around to updating on the successful fixing of the grease seep issue.
Fixwin38's remote diagnosis of brake binding proved correct.

Thanks so much to him for the hub cap in the post and to Umhloti in Dublin for the spare dust cap. Both of which fell off during grease seep episode.

What a great community!

...Now I really should go about joining up.

See over here in dear old Ireland we really do rely on each other and on the forum, it has over and over again proven invaluable.

Oh and well worth the membership fee I think.

Mike
