I need help with my dads 1989 230GE with eng no 10298722001065
From memory it has done less than 100000 miles.Oil light comes on after 5mins,switch has been replaced,X2 oil changes, remote press gauge shows less than 20psi.The engine start and runs fine ,does'nt use any oil or water, and no metal in oil filter.
Im thinking replace oil pump, anybody had this problem?
What Haynes manual would cover this engine?

Hi has somebody put the wrong filter in it ??? what grade/type oil are you using? synthetic/semi synthetic not the best with 100.000m on the engine try 15/w40 or 20/w50..does oil pressure drop much from 20psi when hot ?..

Re: 230GE low oil pressure

If you are using semi-synthetic or fully- synthetic oils, this is a typical oil pressure for it.

At the milage age of your engine, you want to be using a mineral oil, something like 15W/40, 15W/50 or just a mono grade oil in the summer.

Miller oils specialise in Diesel engine oils, these can be got from any reputable motor factor.

But before jumping the gun. Going along M/benz lines lower oil pressures are accepatable given wear and tear. The minimum oil pressure of 1bar is acceatable at idle speed (given normal oil level) and with the engine hot. Any less reading, you have a possible problem at either the crankshaft bearings, oil pump or its relief valve. There are other possible areas but what ever the case, you are looking at a strip down to investigate further.

Generally, oil readings from cold start to hot should show the highest oil pressure at cold engines at idle and rising as the engine revs up. A 3bar reading should be usually got reving the engine. If you struggling to get higher that 2bar, the probability of wear is high. there will be other factors to give clues to mechanical problems, These are usually akin to the pistons, are they noisey or thumpy at idle and then smooth out at higher revs etc, etc.....

Re: 230GE low oil pressure

Thanks for the comments, just spoke to the 'old man'.pressure is below 1 bar .Oil is bog standard 15 40w.I even tried wynns supercharge last year and it was no better.Good point about the filter I dont know what make it is,I will get hold of a genuine merc one.The engine sounds and pulls really sweet. What type of oil pump is it? can it be changed with the engine in?

Re: 230GE low oil pressure

Hi unless it has been run with intermittent oil changes/wrong oil which will sludge the galleries. I cannot see that the pump should be worn...pan can be dropped with engine insitu but some bolts hard to access.any oil leaks? a failed rear crankshaft seal will lower the oil pressure and fill the bellhousing with oil eventually......

Re: 230GE low oil pressure

Hi Borzoibob
I did eventually fix the problem, though I am not sure what fixed it as due to time constraints I changed both the oil pressure relief valve spring, and oil filter at the same time (both genuine merc items)which cost about £1.30 & £4.80 respectively.
It has been ok ever since including some high speed motorway runs.
I have also now installed a genuine merc low pressure switch which from memory is only set at 0.3 or 0.5 bar i.e only max 7psi!.
I wish you luck with yours

Re: 230GE low oil pressure

Hi all, I have just started seeing the oil light come on at idle. I have since flushed the oil and replaced with 10w40, also oil filter and O ring changed. Light still comes on. It is my daily driver and wondering should I take it off the road? My G is s 300Gd with after market turbo. I would in future like to replace the oil pressure switch with a pressure type. Have brought the G to local mechanic but was given the run around. Im working in the limerick / ennis area. Any fellow G experts around that could offer some advice?

tnx

Adrian

Ps

Could somebody tell me the part number for the óil pressure relief valve spring' that would suit my engine type om617 3ltr diesel w460 variety

Re: 230GE low oil pressure

May I suggest that you may get more replies if you start a new thread for your 300GD engine rather than confusing matters with a 230GE.

Take the oil-filler cap off and, with the engine on, see if you can  verify that oil is flowing onto the camshaft.

If so, it may be just a faulty pressure switch, but you risk damaging your engine, if the pressure is really low.

I'd start by replacing the pressure switch with a new one.

(Note that when renewing the oil, the oil-pressure light will sometimes take 10 secs or so to go out.)
