after an enthusiastic off road trip at christmas in my cab, i think the diff just caught the sump

resulting in a constant drip!! well the sump has been fixed today[ so i am told] and ready to fit. my friend thats doing the work said he will raise the engine as much as possible to give more clearance.

i was just thinking.... would a set of orc body lift spacers help in giving me more clearance between the dif and sump :?:

i have a busy off roading summer waiting... and dont want to get caught out again :P

Re: body lift.

No it won't.

The engine mounts to the chassis as does the axle - taller springs are the answer or find the correct sump/engine mount combo

Re: body lift.

i thought as much, but someone gave me the wrong info which triggered me to ask.

ideally i would like the right part number for the sump of an early 463 diesel.

i will however order a set of eibachs with 40mm lift from orc in a few months and also raise the engine a bit from the mounts.

Take care not to upset the propshaft angles

Re: body lift.

i had these springs on my old 280 and it ran great, with no immediate side effects.my mate shakir has had the eibachs on his 280 for at least 4 years now and all is fine. i think 40mm it the safest increase and i think needed, because i caught my side steps on a few occasions!!

Re: body lift.

Hus,I was thinking of 'raising the engine abit' when I said watch the prop shaft angles. The short prop from gearbox to tran box has had very little movement over the years and is accustomed to to this range - if you lift the engine a bit on the mounts then you angle the UJ plane at the gearbox - chances are you will be fine, just be aware of potential problems.

Re: body lift.

Hus,
Lifting the engine sounds pretty iffy to me! Whats going to happen to the gearbox/bell housing? but I think Chris has hit on the biggest issue the prop to the transfer case.

40mm lift will simply cover up the problem. Yes you have moved the axles 40mm away but on full compression/articulation it will still end up in the same position that caused your problem.

Best solution I would guess is fabricating a copy of the correct 463 sump out of your existing sump. However I note that your 603 engine is NOT tilted to the same extent as a 463 so this maybe your real issue?

Re: body lift.

Huss, just drive properly, read the terrain, I did extreme off roading in my 280, never banged my sump, if in doubt use a spotter.

Re: body lift.

cheers guys for all the tips and advice.

i wont be lifting the engine anymore, but i will look into the engine leaning to one side on original 463 diesels [300 GD]

a 463 sump is the best solution i guess.

You are looking at the sump of the W460/W461/W463 250GD/290GD if I am not wrong.

You might be able to find it second hand, becuse it was fitted to both the military and the civilian types and altogether 24,771 units of this G of all types were made:

460 317 250GD Diesel 2,400 1 Convertible with fixed windshield 95
461 317 250GD Diesel 2,400 7 Convertible with folding windshield 9,488
461 318 250GD Diesel 2,850 10 Convertible with folding windshield 478
460 328 250GD Diesel 2,850 4 Van 60
460 329 250GD Diesel 3,120 9 Chassis Cab 374
460 337 250GD Diesel 2,400 3 Station Wagon 1,437
460 338 250GD Diesel 2,850 6 Station Wagon 436
461 323 290GD Diesel 3,400 9 Chassis Cab 738
461 328 290GD Diesel 2,850 4 Van 1,769
461 329 290GD Diesel 3,120 9 Chassis Cab 3,074
461 337 290GD Diesel 2,400 3 Station Wagon 2,818
461 338 290GD Diesel 2,850 6 Station Wagon 1,836
461 341 290GD Diesel 2,850 5 Pick-up 128
461 367 290GD Diesel 2,400 7 Convertible with folding windshield 944
461 368 290GD Diesel 2,850 10 Convertible with folding windshield 824
463 304 250GD Diesel 2,400 1 Convertible with fixed windshield 14
463 324 250GD Diesel 2,400 3 Station Wagon 227
463 325 250GD Diesel 2,850 6 Station Wagon 31
24,771

Part number is A 602 010 09 13 and is listed at € 388.85 in the Russian website (allow for 20% extra exc. VAT).

Be careful, because the sump fitted to the 290 GDT is different.

would the sump on your G match the 603 saloon engine?

Yes, I was wrong.

For a moment, I thought that the engine fitted to your G was the OM602 coming from a W124 250D.

Now I realise that it is the OM603 coming from a W124 300D.

So therefore forget anything I said in my previous post.

The part number your are looking for should be A 603 010 14 13 (€ 431.70 from the Russian website). This is the oil pan I get from the EPC when I enter the chassis number of my G.

Sorry for the confussion!

No Huss, the only OM603 Turbo factory fitted to a GWagen is that of the 350GDT/G350DT and the sump is p/n A 603 014 25 02.

 Geez! I wasn't aware that Madrid was on the way from Blighty to Cyprus... I would have thought that you would go via some Italian port... but if you fancy coming this way let me know and we can arrange something!

Huss I believe there is a spare seat left. If you hurry you can come play with us too.
Stanstead Sunday morning, we can adopt you as a token Irishman for the trip.

Mike

Re: body lift.

You could be back to work for 16;00 Monday. Surely even you don't work Sunday. Ah, come on, we'll mind you.

As far as work goes you could do a crash course in delegation!

Tempting isn't it?????????????????????????????????????????????????

See you soon!

Regards,

Mike

Re: body lift.

my cabi s back from the mechanic :!:

the sump seems to be perfectly dry with no drips at the moment

that saves me at £500 for a new 463 oilpan

i have found a 300D w124 oilpan from germany and will check its part number against those on the oilpan on my cab. if they match i will buy it and have it modified properly this time and keep it spare.

i will have the orc springs sorted next month. that together with longer bump stops should sort me out good and proper.
