Hi chaps,im struggling with my front pistons not going back into the caliper on my 85 G,the pads have got way way too low,so the pistons might not be square in the seals.the inner pistons went back ok,but i cannot budge the outer two.Is there something im missing here,do i need to twist the pistons or undo the bleed nipples?
ive searched the forums but im getting nowhere, any help would be great, cheers tim

Re: front brake pad replacement HELP !!

i would always undo the bleed nipples to prevent master cylinder overflow. A trick ive used before is to get/make a bit of timber the current gap between the pistons (caliper removed from hub) then use hydraulic pressure (brake pedal) to line up/square off the pistons. Then use two adjustable clamps (the rubberised trigger-type square faced ones) to hold one piston and wind back the first, then reverse it.

Failing that, you'll need to remove the caliper totally and use compressed air to remove the pistons (blow into union where hose joins caliper) be ready to catch them!!!! if it was me though and i was going that far i'd order some new seals and class it as a mini overhaul.....

by the way, you never came back to me about thise tyres, did you? lol

Re: front brake pad replacement HELP !!

hi,no i didnt did i !! i still have them all, just been way to busy at work to dig them out and photo them. sorry.let me know if you still need them.
I tried in vain to get the pistons to go back, and after snapping the disc in two i took off the caliper, only to find the brake pipes were well corroded and the hoses are perished.so a tolat overhall is now on the go.it looks like the piston are coroded in ,so possibly a new caliper too.cheers tim

Re: front brake pad replacement HELP !!

Yep I popped mine out with the airline, they were sticking, hence the attention.
Gave them a dammed good rub with 1000 wet & Dry
pulled the seals first though
bunged the seals back in, and the pistons too
and all is 100%
So there must be some other reason for the lack of performance :?:
