automatic box noises
hello,
i know its not a g but its still a mercedes!
my autobox has got a nasty rattle that sounds like a bag of washers being shaken. it ony occurs when in reverse or drive gears, but stops in neutral and park.
any ideas?

Doesn't sound healthy, use the dipstick at the back of the engine bay to check the fluid level in park with the engine running after a trip and see whats what, if it keeps making the noise get it checked to see if anything is loose under the car, if it turns out the job involves opening the gearbox sell the car to a trader and buy another while it is still moving (cheaper in the long run beleive me)
could be drive shaft needle roller bearings collapsed or loose flanges chattering.....
just checked fluid, its a bitlow so off to get some oil now, fingers crossed that solves it, i will let you know, thank you for the help fellas
hope so Tom, itll be the first i've heard of a noisy box when low on oil, interesting this one,...
hmmm, seems to have solved the rattle, well hopefully or its just smothered now so i cant hear it!
the 190 lives on, its got to last me till my car insurance goes down and i can get a g!
