Well I finally worked out how to strip the door lock tumblers on a 460... and they are fully serviceable and rebuildable. :D

I went from having 1 slow grotty lock which worked the central locking plus 2 unusable locks to 3 working locks but..... I need one plunger spring which is about 1.6mm x 6mm and goes under plunger gate to basis it.

I could get it from Lee Springs ... but does anyone have a spare barrel .. I could even service a couple in replacement.

I also managed to make a non matching barrel match my key by changing plungers.

Used 0.8mm MIG wire to clean plunger/gate slots + a wee bend on the end to fish out siezed springs. Rebuilt with waterproof grease.

The door key is very simple compared to the steering lock. It only has 3 levels of notches (high/middle/low) with 0.75mm between them so if you measure the bottom of the plunger thickness you get 3, 3.75 and 4.25 mm thickness which you can add to the key (so thin key = thick plunger and vice-a-versa).

There are 2 unused tumblers at the start .. and then 4 up and 4 down.. front of key is just a wedge to open them.

Also the driver's side was sticky and it turned out to be the top post that the locking plate slides up on .. it needed re-rivetting to the main outer plate using a punch in a vice as an anvil... before it was juddering.. it felt just like grit but no amount of lubrication would make it smooth.

Pictures are large .. as you need to see the detail..

Re: Door Lock spring..

To reply to my own question :?

460 locks are a simpler version of Golf Mk1/2 locks. (They had 4-5 varieties of heights/sizes instead of the G's 3 types). VW do a kit for about £55 that gives you about 40 of each plunger and 150 odd springs; with these you can reset any lock to match. Your friendly VW dealer will do this at a price on the spot if you want to match a barrel to a key. If you are lucky.. they may well give you a "pinch" of springs .. and as these are 1.6x6mm springs.. that is more than enough to redo an entire car :D 8) (they rarely use springs as it is the plungers they use up I suspect).

.. still need a torsion spring and a decent outside housing .. and now wondering if my waterproof sticky grease (Rocol Aquacon 2 from the front hubs) is going to be too thick for cold mornings when I most need this car (it is my Snow-mobile really).

Not sure I should leave the photos up on this site for ever .. security is an issue?
