Hello all,

Im a newbie to the world of G Wagon ownership and was wondering if anyone could tell me the easiest way to lower my car a little.
I have just bought the car (1987 280GE) in the UK and intend to export the car to where I now live, Hong Kong.
The reason i want to lower the car slightly is not to "pimp my ride" which is Im sure what your thinking but because the fact that alot of carparks in HK have quite restricted height clearance.
I don't intend to use the car off road very often so am not bothered about the reduced clearance.
So I would like to know what suspension options there may be.

What are the best parts sources?

Cheers
Alan

Absolutely. And in addition, it is easily reversible....

small wheels just doesn't look all that good on a G, compared to the bigger tires.

is there no substitute 'lowering spring' for a 460/463?

Absolutely right... but then again there is no easy answer to that question. The G was never designed to be used in a ciy with low garages...

Re: Easiest way to lower G Wagon

Alan,
Well ...... I was looking for a G from HK to export to Malaysia. Guess I'll leave that option out now knowing that people import Gs to HK!!

FYI, I've seen many G in HK with the standard springs. Not sure that they are parked underground as I only see them on the streets.

Could it be that your springs have been change to give it the lift?

I've been importing lots of parts from Germany for my G. My advise will be to either change to parts that wear to newer ones or stuff yours with those you may need to change later. It is costing me a bomb in postage as they can only come in with standard parcel at 20kgs a time.

Then again, I have spares you could have if you need them urgently.

The largest one was in a crate for a set of rotten steel rims and new ORC springs. I got the lift I wanted and she looked really good, but didn't solve my rotting rims problem.

Let us know how you get along with your probelm.

Cheers,
Jeff

jeff,

if the destination is malaysia, wouldn't indonesia be a more sensible choice to buy from? only 460 280GEs (both short and long) and 463 300GEs (long only) though

Hi Sochu,

thanks for the excellent pointer. I wonder how difficult would the shipping be. It would be excellent if I could drive one across via ferry.

Cheers,

Re: Easiest way to lower G Wagon

that would be a long drive (a few days worth) and a couple of ferry rides (java-sumatra and sumatra-singapore crossings)

road condition is not so well, from what i've read/heard. this should be more fun than hassle, but lack of road sign may not be a funny thing for a foreigner

Thanks for the info guys. Worst case ill just have to be very mindful of where Im going as regards to parking.
I had a Pajero Evolution before and it was always a worry in car parks.
Anyone know the standard roof height for the 460 SWB?

Cheers
Alan

Re: Easiest way to lower G Wagon

The standard official height is 1.93m but my car is significantly taller than this and is completely factory with no lift.

Also keep in mind that many parking garages are lower than stated due to lights, signs, pipes and other services hanging down and speed bumps coming up.

On top of which ramps can be an issue if your rear wheel is still on the ramp and your front off - you can easily add another 10+ cm to your height.

I generally don't go into any garage less than 2.2m in height especially if it is multi-level.

For all you Indonesian G fans.

As they're not common in Indonesia I just thought I would point out that there is currently a 2002 G500 for sale at Indo Auto Semesta Company in Bandung. with a guide price of $28-35k USD. Not sure on legalities of it though...

Re: Easiest way to lower G Wagon

last G500 i heard (2004) sold for about US$145,000
$28,000 to $35,000 would be the going price for '93 to '98 300GEs

i'd be suspicious of that one.
i looked at the pic on alibaba, the G500 is a LHD, indonesia is a RHD country. i've seen maybe less than 5 LHD vehicle in my entire life.
and we use kilometers instead of miles.

off course, that may not mean anything.
