Hello, I have just had fitted a new slave cylinder to my 1989 300 gd. The clutch pedal is MUCH stiffer to press, also on release the pedal wants to "stick" . The whole action is not smooth, although the garage that fitted the cylinder says it's fine ,clearly it is not, any idea on what may be wrong?? thanks Vic.

I wonder what type of hydraulic oil they used and did they change the seals in the master cylinder?? the rod on the slave cylinder could be binding...or mis aligned.

I can say that they only changed the slave cylinder on the side of the gearbox, they have not changed any other seals. I can only guess they used the right oil. thanks Vic

May sound daft, are you sure the correct slave cylinder is fitted? The problem could be the Master cylinder instead.

The fluid in the system should be Brake fluid.

Re: problem after new slave cylinder

Thanks Rakesh, No it's not daft, I will check tomorrow, I assume it's just a case of noting the number on the cylinder.
I admit to being a little confused myself, the cylinder that was leaking and was changed is to the right side/top of the gearbox. Some people refer to this as the slave cylinder, others as the master cylinder. I thought that they where one and the same. A small explanation will be helpful. vic

slave cylinder on the gearbox....master cylinder in the engine bay linked to the clutch pedal.has its own jar type reservoir for Dot 4 hydraulic oil tucked in the corner behind the air filter......

Hi, In that case Merc main dealer supplied me with the new slave cylinder so I guess it's the correct one, but will check. regards Vic
