Contemplating purchasing some mud type tyres now she is running well.

31 x 10.5 r15 is a direct replacement for my 255x75 r15's but If I can get a bit more clearence under diffs with no down side I would go for the 33's.

The vehicle is standard.

Anybody done this? any thoughts?

Finally, tyre choice - Kumho KL71 any good?

cheers

yes have had bfgs and KL71, have recently purchased another set of kl71 for my nissan, good value but quite wide, seem much wider than the equivalent bfgs for some reason.

the question isnt 33s on a 7" rim, its the tread width that is important, ie 10.5 or 12.5 on a 7" rim.
look on bfgs website they will give specs of each type of their tyres and you can look up the recommended rim width for your size of tyre.
a an aside bfg do make a 33 10.5 15 which might make for an easier fit.

Hi,

Yeah 33" high tyres will fit a 280 no problem at all. 10.5" wide will just be right for 7" wide rims (just)!

This setup you could happily live with on the road too as its "just" about right and would look well on a G and give you the clearance you mention.

12.5" wide tyres will fit a 7" rim, modern tyre machines will fit anything nowadays. BUT, keep them strictly for off road use or get the misses to increase your life insurance cover first.

Also consider turning circle in tight spots off road (rub a dub dub) inner arches and all that.

At the end of the day its down to "Horses for courses" and all that, depends what you are doing with it and how much mods you want to do i.e. wheel spacers etc..

33/10.50x15 BFG Mud T/A now where did I hear that size mentioned before?...........

Thanks Mike.

Can you explain more about the problems I may face with a 12.5 width tyre on a 7j rim?

The vehicle only covers about 1000miles/year and is mainly going to be used for offroad stuff - green lanes and RTV's etc.

Re: Any one running 33x12.5 r15's ?

Hi Andy,

Excuse my ignorance but what are RTV's. Green lanes are OK, that I understand.

1000 mls a year fine but you have to get to the green lane to do it, thats the problem. Speeds on the lane are not an issue, handling on the lane is not an issue, popping the tyre off the rim may not even be a issue. On road use is an issue.

Think of it like a triangle with one pointy bit having the end cut off. Thats the bit that fits to the rim. So the other two pointy bits are the areas where the tyre meets the road (contact patch)approx 12.5"wide.

I would be concerned for the safety element of driving on road with a 12.5" tyre mounted on a 7.0" rim. Especially as these tyres have a high aspect ratio (height of the tyre sidewall from the rim to the road)
There would be massive amounts of tyre roll when cornoring even at modest speeds that could result in an accident as on road speeds are naturally higher than green lane speeds or even doing play days at a centre. Remember you still have to get there and home again.

The above forgets about any down side using such a wide tyre on the G wagen off road as mentioned previously.

Go to an off road day find a few G wagens that aren't trailered there and back and ask them what have they tried and got away with. Don't go with the first suggestion either as choice is good.

Hope this has been of some help.

Regards,

Mike

Thanks Mike.

I understand what you mean now.

'RTV'...Road Taxed Vehicle trial - offroading through specified courses laid out with canes.
