seems to be leaking from the reservoir any ideas as to the solution other than regular top ups?

Re: leaking power steering on 463

Mine was leaking from the reservoir around the filler so I ordered a new gasket from the MB dealer. Shock horror it was the wrong one so I simply removed and reversed the existing gasket. Leak cured :D

I had mine leaking until I decided to renew the fluid and filter and it completely cured the problem.

Curious to know mortinson, did you change it by simply sucking out the old and replenishing with new, or did you remove a connection somewhere to drain it all out...

Re: leaking power steering on 463

I have been suggested both courses of action, but opted for the former to avoid risk of damaging the power steering pump.

Procedure:

1) Pump all the fluid out of the reservoir using a big syringe
2) Fill in with clean fluid
3) Run the engine for a few minutes, turning the steering from lock to lock
4) Repeat numbers 1 to 3 two or three more times
5) Fill with clean fluid and close reservoir up.

Don't forget to replace the filter, P/N A 000 466 21 04

I am using good quality ATF Dexron II F as steering fluid.

Cheers

Re: leaking power steering on 463

Thank you for the detailed reply and accompanying photo.

I thought it was time to replace mine as it smells a bit funny (and there is some sign of minor leakage on the outside of the reservoir). Fuchs apparently make an MB-spec fluid but I don't think DXII/III will do any harm. Will ask the dealer what they charge for their fluid to get an idea of the cost...

The MB fluid turns out to be about £8/litre ex-vat.

Depends on the engine, looked it up on a 280GE, #129 in the image

Yes... all GWagens I know of have the same filter at the bottom of the power steering reservoir. You will see it once it is empty.

Anytime is right if you have never done it. Most mercedes garages don't even know of its existence and don't change it....
