Recently had the clutch replaced, having badly burnt it out towing a trailer in the wrong gear [high ratio 4wd,not low ratio!!!!!!idiot!]1989 280 GE.Got G wagen back with a vibration when pulling away in first ,[initially i thought maybe the clutch is just bedding in......}then it disappearsas you accelerate, comes back slightly when changing into second then disappears again when up to speed,no vibrations when changing to 3rd or 4th gears. The vibration is only present when gears engaged not inbetween when clutch depressed and seems to be when under load only [more pronounced with a trailer on back!].I have had two garages look at it who both said the same thing, weak springs in the centre of clutch. The person who installed it says.....poppycock or words to that effect and says clutch is fine it's your propshaft, any body got any similar experience/advice re above symptoms?many thanks.nick

Re: vibrations.........

Hi worn crosses on the propshafts would be the most likely problem ..lack of grease and possible "wind up" from your tow.....check all three shafts for symptoms...lots of heavy grease up all eight nipples may be a temporary solution and it will prove a point.......

Re: vibrations.........

Hello Nick,

On the assumption, that these faults were not present before your clutch renewal, but have manifested immediately, after the clutch renewal, then, I would immediately suspect if your garage had separated the prop shaft. (p/shaft) In between, the gearbox (g/box) and transfer box (t/box) during the renewal of the clutch.

I would check all p/shaft. Joints for play. Handbrake applied, wheels duly choked, move p/shafts individually for and aft, up and down on the universal joints (u/j) axis’s. There should be no play in these joints; grease them while you are in the vicinity. To grease, pump grease so some of it oozes out of the joints, or just begins to. Check the sliding joints, firmly grab the p/shaft by each hand, either side of the slide section and rotate back and fro against each other, again, there should be no play; likewise, grease the joint with at least 5 pumps of grease into the slide.

Check all the p/shafts, three in all. For the centre p/shaft, further check to see if the alignment marks meet up, if not, then the garage has had this shaft split at the slide and not realigned it back properly, this is generally difficult to do, once separated. If there are no marks, then as a general rule the York at each end of the p/shaft should be some 90 degrees out of sink.

Weak, centre springs of the centre plate would cause clutch judder that will be noticeable upon pick-up, no effects would be felt once the clutch pedal has been left or is fully engaged. Weak engine mounts would cause vibrations upon power take-up or could be noticeable engaging from forward drive to rearward drive.

Alternatively, a problem is developing in the g/box. I think this is highly unlikely, since your problem eminated form when the clutch was renewed in which case I feel the two are related.

Regards,
