15 inch tyre thoughts
Hi,
I'm restoring my much loved '84 230GE SWB & need to replace tyres.
Currently it has 31 x10 50R15 BFG and is used mainly on road.
I am currently looking at this page
http://www.4x4tyres.com/index.php?show=tyres&rim=R15&profile=31x10.50
The 'Best Value' - made by BFG - are the 'Cavalier AP'
Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Pete
Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
You mention restoring the 230. Are you restoring to as original spec totally or just trying to get it right so that alot of the important bits are done?
If to original spec then go for something else.
If to a real tight budget then go for them.
It s easy say a tyre is made by BF Godrich, but they have a reputation that most will atest to on this forum. If in doubt ring Michelin in Stoke and ask them do BFG make this tyre.

Mike
Right,
Also consider the Falken as they are made by Yokohama as a second line brand. I would rate them higher than the other best value tyre you mention.
If you would like to spend a little more I would also recommend the General Grabber AT2 tyre which will do all you will ever want of a tyre.
If you are intent on buying off the internet make sure you find out how much your local garage is going to charge you for fitting or if they will do it for you at all.
Sometimes when you include fitting costs your local tyre shop can be as cheap as any.
Put your cards on the table with them and tell them the best price they have to match. That way they can have no regrets if you go elsewhere.

Mike
Have fun!

Thanks for replying.
I'm on a tight budget in that I don't want to spend more than the car is worth. I've seen people spending multiples of what they could ever get for their car & I don't want to do that.
I think the wagon was 'upgraded' in or almost straight out of the factory as it had wilton carpet, all electrics, walnut, etc. I waxoiled it religiously every summer since 1990 but some of the twin skin panels such as under the rear lights were unavoidable rusty & these have been carefully repaired with 2mm steel & thoroughly rustproofed. I'm simply trying to put the car back to 'vgood' condition - newly upholstred, new roof lining, rebuilt engine is only 15K, repaint, replacing all nuts, bolts, screws with SS. That kind of thing.
So - given I've spent already probably what I could get for the car I am reluctant to spend much more on tyres. My thoughts are road safety (I'm personally not going off road other than the farm track that I live on), and driving economy.
I have read good things about 4x4tyres.com on various other forums - that's how I found them.
