Which was very upsetting so I thought I ought to investigate it, especially since it worked in 4WD just not in 2WD. Now the odometer was already up the whatsit and since I have such facilities I popped it up on the four poster to take a look at the speedo drive etc. The long and the short of it is this......

The bit that went in there.....

that needs to look like this

or that.....

had turned into this and needed to be extracted using a spatula (which I've put back in the kitchen drawer...)

No funny noises, clanks, bangs, rattles or anything, just no 2WD speed reading. Thank crunchie for wheels-free ramps, tea and workshop facilities.

This was after a day around the Salisbury area with some friends in Def 200tdi (2 of them) and a series 3 88inch. They were all suitably impressed by the Merc as I was on knackered road tyres and went everywhere they did thanks to diff locks.

Hi Phil messy!!! you get the same speedo glitch if the front propshaft is removed...the transfer box has to have the traction from the front axle to activate the speedo. did the half shaft break as well ???

Hello, I was lucky and the front halfshaft was intact. The CV had literally exploded, no recognisable parts at all. Still, got a replacement CV for 66 notes which I think is cheaper than a Land Rover one, couple of hours of my time to stick it all together again and bingo, back to normal. Just got some Goodyear Wranglers (used) on there to replace my nasty old tyres, swapped a full set for a pair of Range Rover axles and as a bonus I'm getting the diffs back. Once I've got those bits from you, it'll be on its way to being finished, still contemplating a respray in black, but anyway, I've diverted from the topic in hand.
