petrol tank rot.
well I am gutted, just got the warm up regulator sorted, and thought I was in for some happy motoring.... but no..
the petrol tank has now rotted through and started leaking all over the place. on closer inspection the tank guard is even worse than the tank.. so that will need to go too.
I have a spare tank in good condition but its only got the connector for the offside saddle tank.
questions:
can I get away without replacing the tank guard? just using the straps to hold the tank in place?
if so what would you do with the fuel pump? re-site it to somewhere a little less exposed? and would this pass the mot?
is it possible to replace the exisiting tank completely with a more durable race/offroad version? and what other implications does this have? I have had a look at some on www.rallydesign.co.uk and they do a 32 gallon fuel cell but the filler is in the wrong place and there seems to be no fuel guage fitting.
I am looking for the most cost effective, but quality repair/replace job. what do you guys think?
I think that some member had his fuel tank repaired/recoated. The plastic tank conversion from MB retails at something like € 1,000 so it is not cost effective.
Use the search function. It must be somewhere in this forum.
It is hard to find sound used tanks....harder if you want one with two saddle tank ports.ignore the nearside saddle tank and fit the good tank you already have..if you are offroading a deflector panel is a must but easy to fabricate one from mild steel or aluminum checker plate..make sure the straps have the compression springs fitted to absorb the odd scrape and cushion the blow.......
the pump is very exposed without the tin guard in front of it.secured with cable ties in a plastic container is one way to go on a short term basis.did you sell your folding seats?..I see AdrianG asking under Parts Wanted is asking.....
try "fuel tank re-nu" on google. this is a franchised repair process which can repair quite large holes & rusting in fuel tanks & pipework. there is also a lifetime warranty with this.
thanks for the info,
I need to get this sorted tomorrow, so I am going to put the spare tank in without the tank guard for now and maybe get one fabricated later. will take some photos and let you see the state of the problem.
the fuel pump will be exposed to the elements without the tank guard. should I worry about this if I am not offroading?
