Hello,

Recently I bought used OM617 (non turbo) engine.

I'm planning to swap the petrol engine with this diesel engine, because the diesel is lower gas consumption than the petrol.

There are severeal question that I need to ask :

1. The torque from this diesel engine is lower than the petrol's, could it be a disadvantage?

2. I'm planning to install a turbo, is it possible?

3. I'm planning using an autobox (the model is 116), would be a perfect match for the OM617? or should I stick with the manual?

4. Last question, is this the right decision that I made to swap the petrol engine with OM617 (non turbo)?

Thank you very much
Januar

i don't think you should do this conversion, the cost and time far out way the benefits I feel, the non turbo is sluggish, and fitting a turbo is more money and time, and to get it right first time would be a amazing, stick with the 280. How much is the price difference between petrol and diesel anyway ?

I would agree, if you are finding petrol too expensive is there a LPG option that would suit you, the 280 is a nice smooth engine you will be very disappointed with the diesel

Thank you Peter & prwales

If I convert the currency from my country currency which is Rupiah into US Dollar, the gas price would be like this :

Petrol (Shell Super) USD 0.48/litre.

Diesel (Bio Diesel Pertamina-my local stateowned gas station) USD 0.40/litre.

LPG option I think it's not an option for me because not to many gas station sells it.

I'm not driving it everyday to my work place because the traffic jam is quite heavy,so the Gwagen only get it's milage on weekend, say it it's only 50 kms a day, count it saturday and sunday, make it 100 kms.

Maybe you want to tell me that if the milage of my Gwagen not very much, why bother swap it with diesel? :-)

Exactly...based on the 300d doing 21mpg, the 280 doing 17mpg and an annual milage of about 8300miles (5200km) you'd save yourself about $350 per year (or $6.75 a weekend). Is that worth the hassle?

Perhaps the more pertinent question is "how quickly would the conversion pay for itself?" (i.e. how many $6.75's in what you paid for the engine?)

If you do go ahead I'd say you're better off with a manual given the reduced torque and power and I believe you can fit a turbo but that's EVEN MORE hassle!

The 280GE with a manual box is quite rare and for me, the ideal combination. I should stick with it.

Grecian,

Thank you, I got your points.

And I just found out that the engine needs repair, such as diesel pump and injectors.
