automattic stalling...petrol
Hi there, i am a newbie so be kind!
If anyone can help advise me that would be a great help.
Just delved into the g wagonworld with a 1989 280 ges short wheel base, Great condition, BUT... it was parked up for 6 months, got it goign again oil etc, starts first time. But at idle it conks out. Keeping it reved and once driving along it is a dream. But once stopped its revs drop. To restart it I have to totall take the key out and re insert and turn again. It restarts every time straight away...only if i take the key out? Also it is back firing occasionally....Is this due to something like an electrical fault or water in the fuel tank where it has been left standing?
thanks for any info
Hello Howie,
You have provided very little information to go on, i.e. when was the car last serviced before parking up for the 6 months? Etc, etc... Anyhow, Working on the basis the car was o.k. in all respects, before being parked up. I would, firstly suggest to check and inspect your distributor cap and rotar for any carbonising or moisture. Ensure the battery is or has been fully charged up.
Check and correct all engine levels. In an OPEN environment, start your vehicle and bring it to normal operating temperature. Whilst, you are doing this you might want slowly trim you engine speed towards idle and note at what speeds, when warmed up, does the engine cut out at.
If you find, it cuts out at less than 650 r.p.m to 500 r.p.m, then tweak your idle speed adjusting by the big plastic screw viewed just behind the distributor cap. Should the engine cut out at the higher speeds then there is a possibility that there might be an air leak in the induction system by a perished or dislodged rubber hose or tract forming the idle circuit. With the engine running and trimmed to run at close to idle as possible, you might need some assistance to be in charge of this aspect, whilst you carefully spray some brake cleaner in and around the inlet manifold, if leaks are present, the engine running and its tone will immediately change for the better, after spraying. In this case it is a matter of locating the offending hose and replacing it. Check at the very rear of the inlet manifold on the n/side of engine and make sure firstly a vacuum hose from the warm up regulator is connected.
You had mentioned some backfiring, this only occurs during a weak mixture. Although there is no physical reason for the idle mixture screw to change its settings, however, I have found over the years' of working on M110 engines and with K-Jetronic injection the setting can alter. Get the mixture screw readjusted, or just tweak the mixture screw the most minuscule you can, NOTE the initial position from where you start the adjustment, should you get into difficulty, at least you can put the adjustment back to where it originally was.
You may need to check your spark plugs. But, if all was well before, I do not see reason for this, but do not totally rule this check out.
Your engine only starts when the key is removed, I do not see in my mind any links for this, perhaps after an attempted start, you must turn the key back fully, in an anti clockwise position and start again, other wise the safety start kicks in, which does not allow you to crank the engine at a failed attempt.
Waiting for your feedback.
Regards,
i could see what you meant, there doesnt seem much purchase on it though, any tips on accessing it.
Best thing is to get yourself a long screw driver, that will do the job nicely.
Regards,
Thank yo u so much for your advice. I went through some of the other forum questions and found a pic of the idle screw so i could see what you meant, there doesnt seem much purchase on it though, any tips on accessing it.
follow up info on car... it is fully serviced but has laid idle outside for 6 months. oil levels and battery ok .
