I was wondering if someone here could offer me some adivce or opinion on my rear wheel bearings. I just bought my 1988 280GE SWB and was going around and checking the wheel bearings, brakes etc. I found that when I jacked up the rear I could grab the wheel at 12 and 6 and rock the wheel and get a little play and clunking sound, but very little axial play ( in and out) So I changed the wheel bearings and there is still the exact same amount of play / clunking. I did read that the spec for axial play is .1 to .15mm and a max of .5mm Does this seem normal or could somebody try this on their G?

Thanks

Re: REAR WHEEL BEARINGS

If you do not have rear hubs leaking oil or if the bearings are not excessively noisey, then, leave the job for a letter date unless, you do a lot of mileage.

The job its self is not bad to do but will require a hydraulic press to press out the old and press-in the new. Part of a job, you might have to farm out to a garage.

New bearings will have no play at the top/bottom axisis. Prices a few years ago were around £65.00 each side.
