I have been chasing a vibration issue with my 280GE with auto transmission for a while now, the vibration comes on at about 40mph and gets worse up to about 60-65mph. I have checked all of the wheel bearings o.k. , I have checked all the drive shafts and made sure the slip yokes are free and greased. When the front driveshaft was on I thought I could feel some play when pushing up on the slip yoke, but when I took it off it seems really tight. I went for a drive without the front shaft on and the vibration was about the same, but everytime the tranny shifts I hear a grinding sound from the transfer case and the lever jumps. The only thing I can figure is maybe the T-case and tranny mounts? Does it make sense to be worse with the front shaft off?

Thanks for some help.

Re: chasing vibration

try tranny and tc mounts first, but on mine it turned out to be the engine mounts, they crumble

hi check for loose flanges on the shaft between the g'box and the t'box. are all the shafts lined up with the mating marks? what oil is in the t'box? (should be Hypoid 80)

I have the T-case and tranny mounts on order so I will try that. All the shafts are lined up according to the offsets in the manual, 78 deg. on the front and 0 deg on back and middle. I will try changing the t-case oil as well because I don't know whats in there.
