For the 1st time in 5 years my ABS light has come on, usually after going over bad road surfaces, switching the ABS off and on, causes the light to go out untill, the next pothole! Pretty certain its one of the back wheels, Is thereany obvious connection that gives trouble? Advice on checking? :?

Re: ABS Light 463

since it appears to shock induced try checking the wiring to the sensors at each wheel

Having never explored ABS before, Is it obvious how how they are connected? I thought the ABS comes from the half shaft? Anyone else had problems?

Re: ABS Light 463

sometime the sensors at the wheels just need a bit of cleaning.
or the wiring might have lost some skins

Re: ABS Light 463

Has any one got the breakdown of this area. I need to clean the sensor and would like to know what it looks like! and how to clean it.

Re: ABS Light 463

Having made the mistake of pulling around at the wires going to the sensors, trying to see if any breakage , my ABS light now stays permantly on.
Is there any test one can do using a multi meter?
I previoulsy thought the ABS totally reliable!
Help , please!!!

Re: ABS Light 463

Well the up side is that it looks like you’ve narrowed it down to the sensor connections

Suggest you now disconnect each one and check for any corrosion / high resistance connections.

Only other possible cause will be an actual break in one of the wires but not being obvious due to the insulation still holding together. Only likely cause of that being one of the wires not being correctly secured and flapping around.

Re: ABS Light 463

Guys has anyone taken off the wheel and looked at the setup without obstructions? Or taken off the sheet metal spring holding the pads in the caliper? It will be obvious to you then what the sensors are and how they function, it looked simple to me once I'd done all the groundwork, and i'm not known for mechanical genius..why not give it a try.

I think I may have break in the wiring, problem is its of two wheels, couldn't work out how wires clip together. Have a look? Seem to clip in to wiring harness near fuel tank at back and near coil spring on front.
I think Mx you are confusing the pad sensors for wear?

Re: ABS Light 463

Fitted a new sensor to back wheel ( not cheap at £200+) light now goes out, however comes on again after 500 yds. Turning the abs on and off makes the light go out for another 500 yds etc, during braking when abs light not on one can feel pedal pulsate very pronounced, more than I remember. When you used to turn ABS off, the warning light would light normally now when you switch off just a dull glow? Is there any procedure for fitting new sensor?

Re: ABS Light 463

Hi there are sensors for each wheel ..suggest you have another faulty one or wiring decay close to the sensors causing your problem...

I suspect its a loose connection somewhere??? In the book is there any guidelines for fitting the new sensor, no equivalent of TDC?

Re: ABS Light 463

When I've taken out the rear axles, I've had to remove and then replace the ABS sensors. It's a friction fit and you need to use a feeler gauge to get the gap right between it and the ABS ring on the axle when refitting it (I think it's 0.7mm on mine but check first). If there's any play in your rear wheel bearing this can throw a ABS sensor light fault in the dash, particularly if you're going round a sharp left or right hand bend. Taking the axle out and checking the bearing is tightened down properly is not a major operation but may just eliminate it, or be the cause.

Re: ABS Light 463

Yes there is some bearing play, but has been for some mileage. Excuse my ignorance where do you put the feeler guage ( remember I have drum brakes on the back)? Thanks

Re: ABS Light 463

With mine (1999 G500 - disc with drum) the feeler gauge fits between the end of the ABS sensor and the ABS ring on the axle.

Re: ABS Light 463

Thanks, on this 463 the Sensor scews down in to the axle behind brake backplate into axle on top of the toothed ring. Might be possible to shim them from above?

Re: ABS Light 463

Problem solved I hope ,touch wood! Stupidly I didn't remove the old plastic collar from the old sensor which was stuck in place in the axle, so in effect the gap was too largewith twoo collars there, with the old collar removed , everything seems ok. Phew!

Great ressult and very useful for others doing the same job. So easy

Re: ABS Light 463

Roly, just keep an eye on the back sensors, that the wire is covered securely by the protective gaiter, unsure think mine got damaged on a spring change, thus gradually weakening the wire, new rear sensor £200+ each, though MB had only sold 2 over the past year, 16 odd front sensors though.( £70)
