Not sure if this term means much to anyone here, but my G 230 460 SWB has developed a very serious steering problem at 60mph. The steering wobbles very violently, there is no way that it can be driven at that speed.

At lower speeds there is a small amount of wobble, there have been no changes to tires but there is a lot of grease coming from the back of one front hub.

Could anyone advise as to what I should be checking?

p.s. tank slapper is a biking term for a serious loss of steering control, where the handlebars fly back and forth.

Thanks Peter, that looks like a good place to start, have you had this problem before ?

Also, how much is it likely to cost to change those wipers?

I had the identical issue for a while. It was the steering damper and took 10 minutes to replace with 2 bolts. Probably highlighted if you have slightly out of balanced wheels (and I read somewhere on a Merc thread that there can be a lot of variation between wheel balancing services, whether calibrated or not, so worth checking that too at a 2nd tyre place sometime).

Hi Andy yes it is a regular cause of the "head staggers"unless your tie rod /draglink ends are shot...see my recent post to "LEEU" regarding swivel housing seals.....

Got this problem fixed, it was the damper. 5 min job, does require an allen key & spanner in case anyone else finds themselves planning it.
