I've put off replacing the tyres on my 460. I have steel wheels and no extra wheel arches so I'm thinking of the Goodrich All Terrain, but the only size which will fit seems to be the 215 70 16.

Can anyone confirm this is the right / only size for the 460 steel wheel.

Any pictures of a 460 with a set of these would be great.

To put it in perspective I'm running 205R16 right now, so I'm not going for the oversize look.

Here's a pic from the last owner, what would anyone suggest for a better tyre looks wise?

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Go for the 235/85R16 either in All Terrain or Mud Terrain:

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs/all-terrain-t-a-ko/44.html

They can be fitted to those rims and they will look superb. But acceleration and braking will be worse, but with better fuel consumption at constant speed.

Cheers

Thanks for that mortinson, I'm driving in town a lot but I can afford to lose some economy because it's really low mileage. Good to know I would get better motorway costs though.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

I would say to rather stay with the 205's. A standard 230 is going to struggle with the 235/85's.

This is unless you use your car for a lot of off roading, then go for the biggest tyre you can get on.

I still have a 230 with 245/75 16's on and it made a HUDGE difference in power, accelartion and braking.

If you are not concerned about looks, get 205's again.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

I'm happy to strike a balance between looks and practicality, but I'm only driving a few thousand miles a year in this car and rarely even see mud, occasionally a gravel drive!

At the moment unless the car is heavily loaded it accelerates very easily and top speed is not an issue, I could cope with a lower gearing, around town it sits badly between gears at the low speeds Chelsea driving requires.

I'm considering All Terrain tyres because I think they suit the car better, originally I had thought Michelin Synchrone but now the BFG's seem more suitable.

Just remembered the BFG doesn't come in a 205 16, that's why I asked about the 215.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Hi Andy,
I used to run 205-16(50-50 BFG) on steel rims, then I have changed to 225/75-16(80-20 Michelin) and finally, a month ago I turned to 235/85-16 (50-50 Yokohama). I recommend the last ones. Unfortunatelly due to my very limited free time there are no photos available.

I appreciate the input Angelos, I will look at the Yokohama.

Is it the Geolander?

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Looking at the tire sizes the 235/85-16 is nearly 10% difference in diameter. That should change the performance quite a bit no?

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

235/80/16 not available in BFG. Too worried about changing the gearing by as much as the 235/85's plus spare tyre and cover need changing.

I've decided 225/75/16 it's a fraction taller than the 205/16 (1.3%) and they are available in the BFG, plus dealers are recommending that size on the steel rims.

That's my pick at the moment.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Thanks. I've held off ordering them because I don't drive off road, and felt I should look at the road balanced tyres like the trail, the cooper HT etc.

So far I keep coming back to the 50/50 style, main concern I have is aquaplaning. The BFG is the only tyre that seems to get all round good reviews, but the planing issue comes up here and there.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Aquaplaning on new A/T BFG, never, just look at the size of the voids between the tyre treads. If you fill them up you'll be going through a flood. Practical example is to compare them to the tyres on a normal family car that travels the same roads at the same speeds. The std car has no chance compared to you with A/T's on.

Another brand to consider is General AT2 they carry a H speed rating and are also a 50/50 tyre.

They will give you the size, the looks, the grip for a little less money than the BFG and the only trade off is less mileage overall.

Mike

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Well you've put my mind at rest about the planing.

I have looked at the General AT2 and the HT/UHP, one of the dealers near me stocks them and the price is good (about £80 less for a set). He felt they had overtaken the BFG on balance and wet performance too. How are the BFG to balance?

I don't like the General looks as much, otherwise they would be my choice.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Yes there can be some issues with balancing the BFG A/T but it is possible to do it right first time. Get them from a reputable tyre dealer and you should be all right.

The General AT2 is really worth considering in my opinion especially if your mileage with the G is limited.

Mike

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

I have use 205/80/16,2275/75/16 but I decided to
go with 255/85/16 BF M/T on my gd290 w/o arches and w/o lift.
I also swap the 7:34 for 7:37 diffs.Very happy with the setup.
I will take a photo for comments tomorrow with sunlight.

Cheers

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Look forward to seeing that, I've changed to the 5.5j alloys that were original equipment for the 230GE and the tyres need changing, still considering the BFGs but have to bear in mind the 1/2 inch loss in rim width.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Stick with the 225/75x16 size on your new rims and there will be no probs at all.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

Thanks for clearing that up, unfortunately I made the decision to go with a set of Avon Rangers after my post as they came in 205R 16, got them on just before the snow.

Would rather have had the BFG but thought with low mileage the Avon might be all I need, and it's a british mark which I try to support. Will consider the BFG next time.

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

While I applaud your support of "buy British" you might be interested to know that Avon tyre co. has for the last number of years been owned by an American co. called Cooper Tyre.

BF Goodrich while an American brand name has also been sold years ago to Michelin Tyre co.

"We go there and they come here".

Bon chance!

Re: BF Goodrich on 460

I had noticed the cooper/avon connection, it seems a bit more british than most, I think they are making some tyres here at least. Part of the reason was the fact that the BFG would sit there rotting most of the time.

I do kind of regret it but I've been spending a lot of time and money on the G recently so I'll be rolling on the poor mans choice for a while.
