yup, a mechanical system. There was a thing called 5 Star going back a few years and this was a performance boost for 16v VW engines (1781cc), which were also K-Jet mechanical fuel injection, this involved an additional injector and a piggybacked electronic modification. This was doubley effective as it allowed the use of premium fuel and put output up to 175 bhp from 139. Do not know if it was ever available for Mercedes engines though.
