Just popped in to say hello. I'm a G-virgin and I'm currently looking for a G, preferably 5 door. Other than the obvious fuel issues, what are the downsides of getting a 560 conversion done? I have a 2 ton trailer that I need to be able to pull over muddy ground and I fear that the lesser engines might struggle. I would also prefer an automatic and I'd look to LPG convert it. See, I don't want much

Anyone got such a beast for sale? I'll even p/ex one of my Smart Brabus Cabriolets that you can put in the back of your G when on shopping trips :-)

I'm not completely new to the Mercedes 4x4 arena. I have two Sprinter 4x4's, one MWB (312D) and a LWB (316CDi) both with centre and rear difflocks and MT/AT tyres.

Re: Hi everyone

You'd be surprised what a G can pull on a relatively small engine. They are well geared for towing...

Ok a these are a 5l but certainly more than 2 tons.....

MB diesels are fantastic at towing....

Re: Hi everyone

If you want a a 4x4 to tow a 2 ton trailer over land then a 4.2 td landcruiser with front and rear diff lockers would be far better option, non turbo g for towing just don't cut the mustard, yes 560 are great, I had one, I even pulled a dead 44 t truck with mine, but the conversion is costly and so is running it.

Re: Hi everyone

I'll be honest, it was a toss-up between a LWB G-Wagen and a Landcruiser Amazon but I would prefer petrol as it would be cheaper for me to run on LPG. The 4.7 V8 Amazon is an option, but later (post 1999) don't appear to have difflocks, only the A-Trac traction control, which is as useful to me as a chocolate teapot. Many of the earlier Amazons have just one difflock as well.

Re: Hi everyone

I had an older 80-series LC with the 4.6l straight six: I converted it to LPG and was still surprised how thirsty the thing was. If you want to tow, personally you might want to go for a yank tank: can't beat their philosophy - no cure like more cubes.....

good luck

by the way, we had a chevy suburban on lpg and it was far more fuel efficient than the toyota.....it also pulled anything you wanted anywhere. it had a lsd in the rear and was really pretty useful offroad. the only downfall to the non-permanent 4wd systems that the yanks still use is that they don't usually have front cvs and getting full lock can be an issue in 4wd.

Re: Hi everyone

There is nothing American that is suitable. My needs come in this order...

a) optimum traction (3 difflocks ideal)
b) plenty power/torque
c) automatic
d) capable of long distance towing
z) running costs

Fendt tractor
however, regardless of the above frivolity
I rather suspect
(b) 7 (c) when multiplied by (d) are going to cause conflict with (z)
****************
But more seriousley
The 290 Van ticks all the above boxes iffen one finds 24mpg is acceptable, plenty of power & torque. there are a few out there
Cheers

Yes, they are, but I need a third vehicle that can carry up to 6 people. My Sprinters are both minibuses (15 and 17 seat). I run a hot air ballooning company.

There is no conflict with (z) as I generally cover less than 1000 miles each year with the exception of one trip to the Alps in January (and then I would probably take one of the Sprinters)

290 van?

Yes, I did (very much) look at that one, but getting it finished is beyond my skills, particularly as the electronics/ECU/looms etc need to be done, and I would really prefer a LWB.

Are there any G-shops that would take on a completion job like that without me having to sell the house?

M.

Re: Hi everyone

G-class centre have done at least one of their own conversions in the past so I'm sure they would take on the task. I have no experience of their workmanship although they seem like nice chaps. http://www.g-classcentre.co.uk/gclass_sales.asp
