I have a 89' 230GE auto with a sick engine (no oil press).I have sourced a replacement engine,but its from a manual 86' 230GE.
Is it just a matter of removing the clutch and flywheel from the manual and fitting the auto plate with its bolts (also checking endfloat). My Russeck manuals a bit sketchy on this.
If thats the case would the starter ring gear be in same place so I can use the existing starter?
Anyone who may know the answer/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Robbie as you remove the failed engine and gearbox simply transfer the automatic G'box related parts to the host engine after removing the bits from it that are in the way.....

Hi Robbie once you have the removed engine and gearbox parted on the floor and the host engine alongside it is less theory and more fact..having the tools and equipment to remove the grill radiator and bonnet catch crossmember.once removed access to mountings and cables at the front end is good.after removal of the gearbox support and linkages to the gearlever speedo drive fuel hoses and all the bonding leads its time for the chain and hoist watch for starter cables alternator cables and heater hoses as you lift and drag it forward...before re assembly check for gearbox oil seals for failure and service the bonnet catch cable by disconnecting at the handle end drawing out the inner wire cleaning grease and re instal.....***Note an ability to express your feelings during the project can have a stress reducing influence

Is there a good way to reduce the oil loss from the gearbox when you remove the radiator oil pipes. Since the oil pipes are attached to the sump that is something to watch for as well !!

** edit **

I see that's not such a big issue when you are going to remove the engine and gearbox.

Hi Andy two methods ...remove the two bolts holding the oilcooler radiator to the coolant radiator frame and leave the pipes connected...find a local hydraulic component overhaul shop and buy a selection of "K" plugs ( coloured plastic tapered bungs for blanking hoses and ports*** be very careful removing the oil cooler hoses from the oil cooler radiator.use two spanners...one to hold the fitting attached to the radiator and one to undo the nut on the hose end...it is very easy to wring the fitting out of the radiator casing.....and expensive if you do!!!

Thanks for that Fixwin, the interesting bit is the K plugs.

I have the sump off right now and have drained the transmission and changed the filter, but I noticed how the transmission oil loss would be a problem if you remove the radiator to get the engine out.
