460 LWB 4-sp conversion to 5-sp g/box
Hello all,
Since I have limited skills and knowledge of G's, though am learning fast, in my planning to restore an early 1980 460 280GE LWB to a road-legal off-roader use. My question to those more knowledgable than I, would it be a straight swap out from a 4-speed to a 5-speed manual box and which g/box would be most suitable?
Thanks to all.
Hi the 5 speed G.wagon gearbox will fit to the engine in place of the 4 speed G box but you require the 5 speed gear selector and control arms to complete the upgrade."buckalec" this forum has G box. selector and control arms in an 87 G' that he is "reducing to produce"
orientdude hi. if you are planning on making this an off roader i would recommend using the van gearbox from the 308 sprinter :wink:
its the ideal 5 speed with an excellent crawler 1st gear.
try contacting mortinson, he is your closest source of info and help.
guido is the G expert in germany.industrytools24.
buckalec is very honest and a true gentlemen to do business with but ireland logistics are the only concern.
5 speed box on the motorway really makes cruising economic and quiet! i fitted a 5 speed recenetly . it came from a late model w124.
no problem my frıendö just stıck wıth guıdoç the 308 gearbox ıs the one to go for. infact all the details on the gearbox's for the G are on the following site;
just google this; 4x4abc.com
everything G IS THERE !!!! :wink:
Hi Fixwin38 / Hus55,
Though I have heard the 5sp G g/box is not as reliable as the 4sp. However, interesting idea is the 5-sp g/box from a 308 Sprinter. Is this the same g/box? Would the conversion be a straight forward swap or would mods be necessary?
I just spoken to Guido recently on another matter (i.e. fuel tank), and really a helpful chap. With my location, it looks like a lot of cash is going his way, so thanks for the reference.
