Stuck in 1st gear
My 230GE has the 5-speed manual box. While at an AWDC trial yesterday I hit a big tree very hard while in first gear, low ratio and it is now stuck in gear.
Gearbox was working fine until the impact but now the change lever will not budge. Lifting the lever gaiter inside the cab shows nothing out of place.
Clutch operation is fine, and the transfer box works OK so I was able to switch to high ratio/2wd for the journey home (3500 rpm gives me 20 mph so 22 miles was a bit boring!!).
I plan to start at the top and strip down the linkage until something looks wrong.
:?: Does anybody have any suggestions about what might have gone wrong or how to fix it??
Crawl underneath and pull the control rod back from "over centre" and all should be fine..there is a tendency for this to happen if the rubber bushes are worn and as a result the moment at the swivel changes.. new bushes and some *fine adjustment* will help the situation ---the first gear on the five speed G box is prone to jamming if the fine adjustment is not precise enough....
Thanks for the advice. I will crawl underneath when it stops raining :)
Hopefully it will be as simple as you suggest to fix, but probably worth replacing bushes and adjusting before it goes again.
