Newbie Say Good evening
Hmmm an interesting debate....
Basically - the extra toys you get (sat nav, CD multi player, door sill illumination, leather, sun roof, ABS et al) are nice to have. The Mercedes V8 is one of the strongest engines in their stable, and if looked after properly will last.
As I mentioned in my earlier thread, you have the basics - if you have LPG then , I would see it as an extra, so long as it is not the giant tanks that tale up the back, but the torpedo tanks located under the truck.
It is a good car, I use mine as both an off roader, and for work, social, picking the kids up etc. Apart for the fuel, it is a very good car, its different and when you do go shooting, you just advertising you are a) not a sheep, b) have a car that will go places a Range Rover can not, c) something that WILL be a talking point and d) when it is cleaned up looks the Mutts!
But be warned - they can lose you your driving licence and with the right tyres you can clock 128MPH (official)
My vote will be the 500, but take your time and do the research first - you have some fabulous pointer here and some expert opinions - (they don't really count as they all have weedy 300's and can only dream of a 500!   )
Spider1V - I Drive a 500
Morning Maxwell,
Yours seems to keep falling into my search braket.
Any takers so far?
Sorry sold it some time ago now.
I would look at a 2000 G500 if that is the direction you want to go. If speed or power isn't your thing then I would still recommend what I had, a 2000 G300TD - a lot more economical and runs on veggie oil. The 2001-2003 Gs had problems as they crammed a lot more electronics in then including the command system. 2001 is also when the Gs began to suffer from the Chrysler merger - there is quite clearly a quality difference after this point.
Having had both a 92 and a 2000 i would now always aim for a newer G. prwales is just jealous that he's got an old banger of a G....
Importation is straight forward and that way you can buy a G the way it was meant to be built, not this half thought through spec of a G that is available in the UK... Do a search of the forums as it has been discussed in detail a number of times.
All very valid points very valid.
G500 LPG LWB so far.
Will be sure first though.
Love the pictures, awesome.
Yes - I know
Spider1V - Very modest 500 driver
Keep in mind that some of the weedy 300 drivers sold their 55's and are now tree huggers.
spider is right, the 500 must be enjoyable to drive... i have only seen his 500 in real-life once and it was FAST!
Spider, remember the coffee session in London? You pull off just before me and within a split of a second you were something like 50m in front of me already... my friend said 'Pok, you really should get one of those.'

Don't use that "T" word around Spider... but seriously I can see why one would not want to own a G55. I wouldn't unless I had a stable of 4 or more Gs.

   (I woke the kids up laughing!)
Spider1V - Go 500, Go!
Max a 55 is fun, lots of it, but I stick to the speed limit these days, so the only fun I had in it was getting to know all the petrol station staff.
excatly - it's fun but i wouldn't want to use it for distance driving which is why i wanted a G.

meh - distance smichtance!
You can get (at 65-72 MPH) on motorways 400 miles to the tank, why my wife, Clare has returned 22.7 mpg on a run down to see her parents in Essex!
And it is effortless driving on motorways....
Spider1V - Did I tell you I have a 500? 8)
big difference between a 500 and a 55 though.....
and let's not talk fuel economy...
The best I ever got was 14, but then again that was before I was caught for speeding in excess.
Mine's averaging about 18 at the moment, and I wouldn't want to go the gas route - can u buy it round here?. No problems with any of the "toys" as its a 2000. Having had 1989 280 and 1994 300, both petrol, I appreciate the extras it has got. Couldn't live with a 55, despite the wonderful noise - bit like having a Cayenne turbo - just that bit over the top for those of us on a limited budget.
How did it go??
