BFG NEW MUD TERRAIN
Does any one have any experience withe new Mud Terrain pattern?
According to the dealer they are much better on road than the old pattern, or should I stick with all terrain as majorlty of mileage is road, how ever I have lost a few tyres due to cutting sidewalls on tracks, new Mud is meant to have increased protection, running 225/75 16 on steel 461 6" rims.
How noisy is the new one?
TOO MUCH NOICE!!!
like home when off road!
i have a 230ge 1986 w460 and i cant go more than 70 miles!
BFG Mud Terrain had to be re engineered to meet the new European sound regulations that came into force in November I think.
The old tyre KM1 would have been much noisier and rougher on the road but would offer slightly more grip off the road.
The new KM2 version is better in some key areas and compromised in others as a result of having to make the noise grade.
I still reckon when all things are considered including its long mileage potential there isn't much else to come close to it.

Mike
PS Purely off road only try Kumho KL71. Oh, and I haven't yet driven on the new Mud Terrain KM2. Some of the old sizes are no longer available.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I don't believe the new mud T/A will be of much use to you in Ice and snow where the A/t has failed you.
5mm on BFG A/T should still be fine, maybe adjust your pressures.

Mike
You mention feathered edges on your tyres? Can I presume this is on the front ones only and the rear ones are wearing slightly in thecentre?
If this is so then its perfectly normal as they all do it. Hence the idea of rotating your tyres front to rear to even out the wear traits of each axle and extend useful tyre life. 8)
The term M&S tyre I think came our way from the states. It has no real quantifiable meaning over here except to give the purchaser an idea of the tread pattern he can expect to see on the tyre. :?
Snow/winter tyres are a complete different matter and then one can have his/her favourites.
From my limited experiences the best winter tyres were from Vredestein a Dutch company now owned by Appollo rubber co, India and the old realiable Michelin which would be available in many 4x4 sizes unlike Vredestein who would have more car sizes till recently.
Snow chains .......heck.......... have a set and thankfully never had to fit them...........yet!
Never enough snow in my part of Ireland usually

I assume when you say the new MT’s you mean the new pattern BFG’s?
If so what are your thoughts?
You say slightly noisier than the AT’s, on dry tarmac at what speed would you say it becomes noticeable?
Curious as I’m considering some even though my AT’s have a few thousand left yet.
Thanks,
Russ
PS Love the sound of a Panda on studded tyres :D
Their pattern looks suspiciuosly similar to that of the BFG Track Edge, which was no more (and no less) than a decent AT Tyre:
I'll stick to the older M/T, thank you very much!
@ mortison, dont know if you have seen km2's in the flesh but they are a far more aggressive tyre than the now discontinued trac-edge...witch in many peoples veiws were far inferior than the ko a/t......and if ive heard right on the grape vine they are working on a replacement for the aforementioned a/t :(
and as for you sticking with the older km1 m/t's...they are discontinued
I think the new km2 looks far more like a toned down version of the krawler..bfg competition rock crawling tyre.....I tryed to get a set of these for the black edtion when I first started building it but after many broken promises from the Irish bfg distributor I gave up...devon 4x4 now stock them though!
I wonder will the replacement for the ko a/t look like the km2 and the krawler below?......trac-edge anyone!!

You are surely right... but given the use I plan to give my G I would probably go for Fedimas or something of that sort...
A couple of things:
Yes the BFG A/T is being redesigned, iconic or not, they call it progress.
Old mud T/A replaced due to not meeting new EU noise regs.
Claimed same mud ability when tyre aired down on Mud T/A.
Old Mud T/A sold off through Micheldever based in the South of England, otherwise new tyre or go elsewhere.
Prices realigned this Jan so expect some better deals on the above at least in Ireland.
Can't remember what elsa I was going to say.

BFG KM2's on order will report shortly my OEM fit on the ahemmm 90 were woeful, my old Rangie had masses more grip on high speed road tryes rather the the Grabbers, probably lack of weight in the back. Did find my old Insa turbo's on the G were not much good in the snow (great in mud) so will be interesting especially as we have just had another dusting.
KM2's fitted. They are as quiet at 60/70 than the old General Grabbers which were esentially a road trye/semi AT, but tread pattern biased towards road use.
In muddy greasy field yeterday with trailer, Ii was struggling for grip even with the centre difflock two weeks ago, these were great no drama, no diff lock needed.
If we get any more snow I will report back.
As you might expect versus the Insa turbo's at over twice the price, there is no comparison in terms of road manners the BFG's are simply streets ahead.
Time will tell off road but the pattern looks good for self cleaning so we will see.
we had a couple of inches of snow on sunday, KM2's not good in snow but then MT's don't had a reputation for being good in the snow were noticably worse than general grabbers that were OE.
They are however very good in mud :D
I don't think KM1 avilable any longer in 225? However has anyone driven on the new pattern?
My all terrains plenty of tread ( well 5mm) left but grip on wet roads not what it used to be and definately not got the bite in snow.
