How do you check the level (mine always says there is way too much fluid, and seems to change up too soon?)
-can someone give step by step instructions to check and replace fluid?
thx,
G

Just about to do this on a 460, not sure how similar the transmission is though.

There are two lines on the gearbox dipstick being min and max. At gearbox oil temp of 80c the level should be between them. If it is above the upper mark then drain some oil out by releasing the sump plug and taking out 100-200 ml at a time.
You can also check the oil level at 20-30 c (not much good in this weather). In that temp range the level should be 30mm below the lower mark for the 463 and level with it for the 230GE

Hi Roly did not say that you check the level with the engine running and gear selector in "Park" position. Andy if your 460 is automatic the same method applies ..if manual undo the hexagonal (allen key) bung on the side of the gearbox and full is when th oil seeps out..use the same fluid for both manual and automatic...... ATF or Dextron ATF....red or golden colour...

Re: replacing transmission fluid in 4 speed auto box

Yesterday evening I ran the truck until everything was up to temperature...
(30 minute drive)
I parked the G in the garage that is level. I put the selector in "park" and let the engine run idle.
Then I tried to check the oil...
There seems to be way too much, but it is very very difficult to see???
Because of the curved form of the dipstick it picks up fluid whilst inserting/pulling out?
So I doubt if I have a correct reading?
Any tips/tricks?
thanks
G

Hi pull the dipstick out and wipe clean and dry from top to bottom..insert with positive thrust until red locking fixture bottoms out at the top if the filler tube and withdraw dipstick in one movement.it should be dripping wet at the marks indented at the bottom tip of the dipstick ..smears higher up are to be ignored....

Re: replacing transmission fluid in 4 speed auto box

I'm having the same trouble. We refitted my re-cond auto this week. Cannot get it to behave properly. So far we've put in about 4 litres of Dexron ATF, including some in the torque converter before fitting. Is the 6.2 litres mentioned above the total including the torque converter?
So far not getting a reliable reading other than the smears referred to above.
Is there any chance I have damaged the box running it with insufficient fluid? (Just in and out of the shed).

Eddie.

Hi Eddie My workshop manual says 7.1 ltr of ATF-Dexron 2...at an oil temp of 20-30c the level should be 30mm below the min' mark on the stick..at 80c should be at the maximum mark on the stick.... this is all checked with engine running ..gear lever in the "park" position....DO NOT OVERFILL...and make sure you have the vacuum connection on the modulator valve or the gear changes will all over the place.......and no vacuum leaks throughout.....

That's spot-on... see MB service products and capacities sheet for early 463s:
